The cove was perfectly secluded for tonight’s operation. The smugglers were due at 1am and it was my job to make sure everything here was clear and accessible. I made my way down the path to the shoreline. It wasn’t much of a beach, just a small stretch of sand surrounded by rockpools but this would do nicely. I began my mission while the sun was still beating down – midafternoon. It was hot. I looked around. No one in sight. Behind me, the cliff faces towered above me with their many caves and cervices cut into them – perfect for stashing the incoming goods. But I was suspicious and on high alert. There was too much riding on this and those caves were also good places for snoops to hide. And I had good reason to think there may be snoops around. Two young girls seemed to have taken an interest in my whereabouts today. They thought they’d been keeping a suitable distance to not be noticed, to watch me without arousing suspicion. But they’d failed there.
I clambered over the rocks to check the caves one by one. Each was empty. But as I was about to leave the fifth cave, I heard voices on the beach.
“You go for a swim then if you want but I’m staying here!”
“I’m not going swimming, I just said it looks inviting that’s all!”
“Ok, ok! So, are you going to help me or not?”
“Yes, I’ll help. But do you really think this is the place? Do you really think this is even going to happen?! Seems all a bit Enid Blyton if you ask me.”
“Everything we’ve seen so far points to this place and tonight! And yeah, I do think it’s going to happen. And perhaps, we can stop it!”
These were some of the least subtle snoops I’d ever come across. It was almost pitiful hearing them. But, nevertheless, they wereonto something. They knew about the operation and I had to stop them. I watched for a while as one of them, the one with the long, frizzy hair tied up in a ponytail, began walking off towards the caves. The other, as far as I could see, was taking off her t-shirt and denim shorts to reveal a bikini, and was settling down to sunbathe. She started putting on some suncream, lay back on a towel and put on her sunglasses. She looked very chilled.
The other snoop however, was climbing over the rockpools and, I suspect, looking for clues. Despite being dressed for the beach in a red bikini and red slip on shoes, she seemed not in the least bit interested in enjoying the sun but was more determined to be a crimefighter. Pity. She’d have been better off catching some rays like her friend. Because, unfortunately for her, I was now going to have to catch her.
She disappeared into the first cave I’d inspected just half an hour earlier. I knew what I had to do.
After about fifteen minutes, I heard the frizzy-haired snoop climb up the rocks to this cave. I pressed my back against the wall to one side of the cave’s entrance and waited, rope in hand. As the snoop entered the cave, I allowed her to get far enough in so that her friend wouldn’t see her then pounced. I grabbed her from behind and clasped one hand firmly over her mouth.
“Don’t say a word snoop or it’s curtains d’you hear!” I snarled.
The snoops struggled against my grip but I held her tightly and managed to wrestle her down to the ground. I lay on her back, hand still keeping her quiet and hissed in her ear.
“Stop struggling and you won’t get hurt!”
Reluctantly, she gave in.
“Now, I’m goin’ to take my hand off your mouth and you are going to stay quiet aren’t you!?”
She nodded.
“Then, you’re going to put your hands behind your back and I’m going to tie you up! And you are going to behave like a good little snoop, right?”
She nodded again, knowing she was completely defeated by this master criminal. Mwhahahaha!
I moved my hand away from her mouth, pulled her arms behind her back, and was just about to tie her hands when I remembered something.
“Get up!” I demanded as I started to drag her to her feet.
I took her by the arm and led her deeper into the cave. There, a small chamber had been hollowed out of the rock. Access was cut off to the chamber with two rusty, barred doors. I tried the doors but they were securely locked. No way of stashing her in there unfortunately. So, I did the next best thing. I pushed the snoop with her back against the iron bars and put her arms behind her back, crossing her wrists behind the bars. She started to protest as I bound her wrists.
“Come on, you don’t need to do this!” she said. “I’m no snoop, I’m just here to enjoy the beach and..”
“Shut up!” I snapped. “I know what you’re up to. Think you can interfere with my plans for tonight eh? Well, this is the end of the road for you, young lady. I happen to know this cave gets flooded at high tide and I intend to make sure you’re trapped in it when it does! Same goes for your lazy friend out there too!”
“What friend?” The snoop said, trying to sound convincing.
“Oh yeah, you’re alone are you?” I scoffed. “I’ve been watching you. And I must say, I’ve been doing that far better than you’ve been watching me! Must think I’m an idiot!”
“Well, actually now you mention it…”
I glared at her. The snoop gave a nervous giggle.
“I mean, no, no, not an idiot at all...I didn’t mean that, I swear!”
I pulled more rope from my rucksack and started to coil it round her chest and the bars, pulling her tightly against the metal.
“Hey, that’s cold y’know!” She moaned.
“That’ll be the least of your problems soon missy!”
I knelt down and secured her legs to the door.
“Right, now to get your friend!” I said. “But first…”
I grabbed a length of torn black cloth and gagged her with it.
“Don’t want you warning her!”
I turned and was about to leave the cave when I felt I had to break character for a moment. I turned back to Sam and slipped off her gag.
“Before we carry on, I was just wondering…”
Sam looked at me curiously, “Yeees?”
“D’you think perhaps we could, try again?”
She smiled. “What, you and me?”
I smiled back, awkwardly. Maybe this wasn’t the best idea after all. “Well, yeah.”
Sam shrugged. “Dunno. Depends.”
I really wasn’t sure how this was going. “Depends?”
“Yeah,” Sam continues. “Depends on if you’re going to kiss me now or not.”
Maybe this was going ok?
“And what if I did?” I asked, really uncertain. But then, could never tell with Sam.
“Well, let’s put it like this,” Sam said. “If you don’t kiss me now, the answer is definitely ‘no’.”
I kissed her. She kissed back. Just as passionately as we had done before. For that moment, my world just melted. It was only me and Sam. I’d never imagined we’d get back together but just in the few days we’d been here, we’d had that connection again. And I couldn’t have just left it.
“Nice bikini by the way,” I whispered as we broke off the kiss for a moment.
Sam, laughed. “Yeah, well, slightly wasted on you I know, but I thought it was funny.”
It was kinda amusing, and did make a point. But as more of a legs man…
“So,” I said. “Do I get a hug?”
Sam rattled the bars of the door. “Oh, don’t be stupid!”
I laughed. “Fine! Don’t see what your problem is though”
Sam glared at me. “Go and capture my big sis then! Or else we will get cut off at high tide!”
I gagged her again. “Of course. I shall go and disturb her sunbathing right now.”
Sam got back into character and started calling for help as I left the cave. I looked down at the beach. Fiona was clearly getting ready to do some snooping of her own. She was standing up and was about to pull her shorts on again. I snuck up behind her, (sand is good for sneaking!) and grabbed her arms before she had chance to do up her shorts.
“Aghh!” She exclaimed as I pulled her wrists behind her back. “Geez you could at least get me get dressed first!”
“Sorry, you’re being kidnapped, I’m not waiting around for you to be ready! Get moving!”
I quickly picked up her towel, t-shirt and bag and yanked her over towards the cave.
“Don’t try anything stupid, I have your friend already. One false move and you’ll both regret it!” I said as menacingly as I could.
“We know all about your smuggling ring!” Fiona said.
“I doubt you even know what it is we’re bringing in!” I replied as we got to the cave entrance. I pushed her inside.
“Yeah I do,” the snoop said defiantly. “And you’ll never get those, those…” She hesitated, “Pokemon plushies to the market!”
She tittered, knowing full well that Pokemon plushies were NOT what we’d decided was being smuggled.
I went along with it.
“Damn you!” I growled. “Those Pokemon plushies are super rare and I know for a fact that half my audience on Deviant Art would kill for a polka dot Pikachu! The price for them will be sky high on eBay and I’ll be raking it into the bank, you’ll see!”
“Not if we can help it!” retorted Fiona.
We got to the doors at the back of the cave and I started to tie Fiona up the same way as I had Sam.
“This won’t stop us!” Fiona continued to argue. “The police will be all over this place by morning, you’ll see!”
“Good!” I said. “Perhaps I can flog them a two-headed, sequined Squirtle while they’re here!”
Sam looked at me bemused. I gave her a shrug, not knowing what I was on about either.
“Now,” I started to gag Fiona, “If you two annoying snoops will kindly let me get on with my business..”
Fiona mmmphed her protest as I went to leave the cave.
I didn’t actually leave though. I just found somewhere out of sight to keep an eye on them while they struggled, not quite believing how magical this holiday was turning out to be. We hadn’t really planned any further in this scenario but that was fine. Whether we got time to play again before we left for home, I didn’t know. But even if we didn’t, today was more than enough.
