Yup, he'd have been fine. Separated from his family, not given much choice in what work he did, but treated _very_ well. For a few months, anyway, and then everyone would have died. That's the problem with protagonists. They keep finding themselves in the middle of stories, and the problem with stories is that Interesting Things keep happening. Luckily, protagonists tend to end up in the right place at the right time, but if you start asking questions like 'what if they went this way instead of that way', things go bad quickly. :p
