At least she is probably magical now.

Well, that's a chapter title. > The face withdrew, letting her see beyond. It was hard to investigate the entire room with her head bound in position, but whatever she was strapped to was almost vertical, and flicking her eyes around, she couldn't miss the pale-faced trio standing against the wall. "Pale-faced trio" makes me think that all three people who participated in kidnapping her are indeed undead. > In the middle of the room was something very magitek, formed of wires, glowing crystals, glass and metal. She couldn't even guess at its function, nor did she want to. I suspect she'll be becoming very well acquainted with its function in the not-too-distant future, so it's not like she needs to guess. > I admit, I do have some interest in exactly why the high priest of the Faceless put such a sizeable bounty on your head, but I can just ask you that afterwards. She *was* being specifically targeted! I was right! > "I just love you Light types. All it takes is a little scream, and you come running. Such confidence in your precious Light, so sure that they'll protect you. Well, I have news for you; they won't. And now look at you, trapped in the lair of a necromancer, operating with impunity in the middle of Everbright. Right under those lousy gods' noses." This necromancer doesn't seem to have been told that Amy came from another world. > This, my dear, is what's known as a revenant. Huh. That's actually what I had been calling them in my head. > That tear when he'd knocked her out. His actions had been against his will. He was being controlled, following every whim of his master, but inside he was still fully conscious, forced to watch as his body was used to kidnap an innocent girl, probably knowing full well what would happen to her afterwards. So I was pretty dang close, then. I'm pretty sure the lack of control of the revenants' facial expressions is intentional. This necromancer seems like the type to derive sadistic pleasure from them. > "Well, there you have it. I'm going to rip out your soul, enchant your corpse to obey my every whim, then stuff your soul back into it. Then I'm going to send you back to the temple of Light and have you bring me that bishop you were with earlier, and have you help capture him and aid me as I repeat the procedure. Won't that be fun? The timing is quite opportune, you see. Those other two... they're just no fun anymore. I've had them for too long, and the decay has set in. They've grown too numb. Too accepting of their fate. No crying. No interesting facial expressions. What's the advantage of revenants over zombies if you can't watch them suffer? Well, other than the smell, obviously. No, I'm going to have them kill each other, which should get at least a small rise out of them given that they used to be husband and wife, and then you and your priest friend can take over their duties." YIKES. > "Just to warn you, this is really going to hurt," said the necromancer. I should think so. It sounds like there's soul magic involved, and malevolent soul magic hurting immensely has been fairly consistent. > "Impossible!" he gasped. "Why is it drawing so much mana?!" > There came another crackle, then a flash, and the lights went out. > "Damn it!" came a shout, followed by pounding feet. They only made it five paces before the machine exploded. It wasn't a huge explosion, which was fortunate for the tortured magical girl, given that she was three feet away from it, but the flash of light did reveal a couple of fairly large chunks of metal moving through the air quite quickly. Apparently, the necromancer's machine wasn't designed to handle the amount of mana necessary to compensate for the lowered effectiveness on Amy's soul. > A particularly pointy one appeared to be travelling in the direction the necromancer had fled. It impacted something with a crack. RIP the necromancer. He will not be missed. > "So you just killed a necromancer and freed us all by accident? Not that I'm going to complain. I'm just glad it happened before the pull on your soul became fatal. It may be too late for me, or any of the others that monster has made me kill, but at least you're going to be okay." > "Uh..." said Amy, who was now completely free, and, spurred on by the absence of a feeling she'd had all her life, combined with the earlier mention of heartbeats, was trying to take her pulse. "About that..." Welp.
