WYLT - Episode 21 - Chatrooms (JackLemon)

Whaaaaaatsupeverybody it's an alternate friday and you know what THAT means, it's time for another episode of Why You Like This, a show Josh and I host that's about things people like, and also, why. This week we see our second entry in the JackLemon saga, in which the notable Mod reveals his secret, beloved thing is: being a Mod, apparently?! Yes, it's true! Mods: Some Of Them Are Actually Pretty Jazzed About It! Join our honored guest and also me and Josh from at least two haircuts ago as we discuss the ins, outs, and allarounds of community moderation, and more importantly what makes someone enjoy this task!

Also, wanted to let you know that we are starting to get things together for WYLT Series 2. We shot a LOT of these episodes over the course of a few months, and it's taken a while but we are almost out of our backlog. So here's a question for you: What humans or topics have you liked best, or wanted to hear more about? Are you hoping to see anyone in particular, or hear about any thing in particular? Sound off in the comments here and/or in the Discord.

The beauty and horror of the early internet. Though truthfully, I've definitely run into a few businesses in the past where something similar seemed to have happened. The boss's son and all that. I'm honestly surprised there haven't been more Netflix documentaries on a few of these forum implosions.

Jack ?

Oh that talk about Gaia Online mods got me. I was friends with a bunch of them and it was very much a silly process where the site admins just approached you. After they had a few "hand-picked"and site kept growing it was delegated to a few "senior mods" and even further along one of those mods became a member of staff (essentially a community manager). The early mods were indeed revered, but it got super frustrating when it was so clear that this was just some inner-circlejerk with no clear code of conduct. When one of them went mad with power there were no checks or balances. It was just teenage drama ran by a bunch of nerds who had no idea what ship they were trying to steer.

What a treat! After a few years in mIrc I found comicbookresources.com which actually absorbed the IGN message boards when they went all news.
