Grand Game 507: Blind Drop
Added 2024-08-31 06:57:09 +0000 UTCI stared at the garment sitting on the table but made no move to take it, admittedly more than a little surprised by how easily Kesh was offering up one of the emporiumâs famed red robes.
âThatâs it? Youâre just giving it to me? With no strings attached?â
âI trust Safyre to use it wisely,â Kesh said simply. âShe understands the danger, not just to me, but her fellows in the emporium if she misuses them.â She paused. âBesides, the robes come with their own âstrings,â so to speak.â
I frowned. âWhat does that mean?â
She gestured at the package on the table. âGo on, take it. Iâve unshielded the robesâ properties so you can see for yourself.â
Still frowning, I stretched out my hand.
You have acquired a set of emporium robes. This item is a rank 12 artifact created by the Power Herat and has been designed to shield its user from attacks and conceal their identity. It has no minimum requirements to equip.
Warning: a location beacon has been concealed in this artifact. It will automatically activate if the user suffers any damage or on request by the itemâs creator.
I pursed my lips. âUrgh. It has a locator beacon.â
âYes, that strictly limits the itemâs use.â Kesh paused. âIt should not bear mentioning but Iâll say it anyway: donât take the robes to your hidden base.â
âI wonât,â I murmured, still unhappily studying the robes in my hands. âSafyre didnât mention the beacon.â
âShe doesnât know about it.â
I looked up in surprise.
âNone of my agents do,â Kesh continued. She smiled thinly. âIn fact, Iâm fairly certain that the Triumvirate never intended I find out either.â
I blinked. âThen howâŠ?â
She laughed. âLike you said, Iâve lived a long life. Not all of it has been spent frivolously. Iâve managed to acquire a few tricks of my own along the way.â
âI see.â Turning back to the robes, I wondered how to factor this latest wrinkle into my plans. I couldnât take the thing back to the nether-infested sector. I would have to store it elsewhere, somewhere that wouldnât surprise the Triumvirateâif they ever thought to lookâand somewhere Safyre could easily reach.
âTell Safyre not to return to Nexus,â Kesh said.
My brows furrowed. âYou donât want her to come here?â I raised the robes. âThen why give me this?â
âSafyre will need it to visit the emporium vaults. Donât ask me where that is, the location is secret, but Safyre knows. I will arrange for the other forsworn to rotate through the vaults in the coming days so she can speak to them there. Safyre can also collect your purchases while sheâs there.â She glanced at me sidelong. âAssuming youâve managed to arrange payment before then, of course.â
I nodded in understanding. Kesh might be willing to help us, but she still had a business to run. âYouâll have your money,â I promised. I paused, struck by another thought. âIn fact, I can fetch it right now if you allow me to wear the robes.â
Kesh frowned.
âJust this one time,â I added hastily. âAnd only to get past the safe zoneâs wards.â If the robes could hide Safyreâs forsworn Mark, they would just as easily conceal my Power Mark from the detection spells the Triumvirate had placed around the safe zone walls and gatehouses.
The old merchant sighed. âAlright, Iâll make an exception.â She threw me a stern look. âBut just this once.â
I bowed my head. âThank you.â
âYouâll be taking your companion with you?â
She meant Shael. âYesâŠâ As tempting as the idea of leaving him behind was, that wouldnât do. For all his faults, the bard was a savvy operator and knew his way around the Game and its players, more so than any of my other companions. If he was going to be a full-fledged member of the Forerunners, I had to use every opportunity to learn his strengthsâand weaknesses.
Kesh nodded. âIâll reach out to Loken in the interim. It should not take long to get an answer.â
I rose to my feet. âThen I best be on my way.â
â” â” â”
You have equipped a set of the emporium robes, concealing your identity.
Before exiting Keshâs office, I put on the red garment, transforming myself into just one another faceless emporium agent, and as I left the compound, none of Keshâs employees gave me a second glance, not even the two at the gate.
âCome with me, Shael,â I whispered to the bard slouched against the compoundâs outer wall as I strode past.
âThanks for the offer, friend,â he began. âBut Iâmââ
Breaking off, he threw me a sharp look, no doubt finally recognizing my voice, before his gaze flicked to the two giants watching us. âWhatever you wish, friend,â he said, starting again. Keeping pace beside me, he waited until we were out of earshot before speaking again. âMichael?â
âThe one and the same,â I whispered back.
âHow did you get those robes?â he hissed. âPlease donât tell me you stole them.â
âOf course, I didnât steal them. And the how is unimportant.â
âAlright, what about the why?â
âIâve got to leave the safe zone, and I prefer my identity not to be revealed,â I replied.
Which was true enough.
I was fairly certain that the spells embedded in the safe zone exitsâlike those in the banksâwere powerful enough to see through my mimic spell and detect my Power Mark. And while I was not a criminal in NexusâyetâI wanted to avoid the attention my Markâs revelation would bring.
âWorried about Loken, are you?â Shael asked, throwing me a shrewd look.
âYou could say that,â I murmured.
The half-elf sighed. âAre we still on yourâwhat did you call it? ââshort stop?ââ
âNo,â I admitted. âThis is another detour, but itâs the last one, I promise. We just need to fetch something.â
Shael didnât say anything, but I could sense his unhappiness. Still, I only needed him to be patient for a little longer, then heâd learn the truth about everything.
â” â” â”
You have left a safe zone.
We passed through the south gate with only a cursory nod from the Triumvirate knights on guard for my red robes.
âWhere to?â Shael asked.
I glanced around, searching the streets of the plague quarter for a likely alley. I was uncomfortably aware that my every movement was potentially being trackedânot that I thought the Triumvirate would bother with such without real causeâand had to be doubly careful of my movements.
âThere first,â I replied, pointing out a narrow and heavily shadowed street that my mindsight reported as empty. âWait at the entrance.â
Not commenting, Shael watched as I ducked into the alleyâs depths and drew the shadows around me.
You have unequipped a set of the emporiumâs robes.
You have cast mimic, renewing your Actus visage. Remaining duration: 10 hours.
Stuffing Keshâs robes into an empty bag, I buried them in the trash and rubble littering the alley. Leaving the garment behind was a risk, but not as large a one as taking it to Nicolaâs drop point. And besides, I didnât intend on being gone long.
My disguise in place, I strode out of the alley, and with Shael close on my heels, headed deeper into Nexusâ poorest quarter.
â” â” â”
Heading due south, Shael and I cut a wide arc through the plague quarter. As we did, my gaze idly drifted to the Triumvirate citadel dominating the skyline, and I wondered which emporium agent had replaced Safyre in the knightsâ castle. Was it another forsworn?
âWhat are we doing here?â Shael muttered. âA rift could open at any moment.â
I glanced at him sideways. The bardâs gaze rove restlessly, darting from the pockmarked cobblestone streets to the dilapidated buildings, and from the wary residents to the heavily armored groups of passing players.
âYou havenât spent much time in the plague quarter much, have you?â I guessed.
âNo.â
My brows rose at the curtness of his response. âHave you been here at all before?â
Tight-lipped, he said nothing.
His silence was answer enough. Taking pity on him, I attempted to set him at ease. âRifts arenât that common here. Yes, they appear, but not every day, and not in multiple locations at once. Although,â I added in fond reminiscence, âafter my first day here, I had a somewhat different picture of the plague quarter.â
Despite himself, Shael looked intrigued. âWhat happened?â
I laughed. âI ran into a rift. Quite literally.â
Shaelâs eyes widened.
âBut in hindsight, it was probably for the better.â My thoughts drifted as, not for the first time, I wondered what things would be like if I had not run into Simoneâs party that day. Would I have still entered the guardian tower? Would I have still discovered the nether-infested sector, survived my next brush with the stygians, and met Draven, Adriel and the others?
Possibly not.
âI have been to the plague quarter before,â Shael volunteered finally, âbut never this deep.â
I nodded, unsurprised. âThen, youâll need this,â I said, handing him a small crystal.
You have lost a crystal of rank 4 disease protection.
Withdrawing another crystal from my belt, I crushed it in a closed fist.
You have activated a single-use enchantment, casting a ward of disease protection around yourself. For the next 4 hours, you will be shielded from tier 4 and lower infections.
Silently copying me, Shael did the same.
âGood, now weâre ready,â I said.
âFor what?â he wondered.
âFor the saltmarsh,â I replied.
â” â” â”
Nicolaâs drop point was not in the saltmarsh proper.
Rather, it was in one of the many abandoned houses along its edge. âWeâre here,â I said softly as we rounded a corner and the building in question came into sight.
âHere?â Shael asked, looking around in confusion. âHere, where? All I see areââ
Yanking the half-elf back, I cut him off.
âWhaââ
âShh,â I hissed. Drawing the shadows around me, I edged up to the closest building.
On my prior visits to the plague quarter, Iâd always found its southeastern sectionâthe region overrun by the saltmarshâto be vacant. Few players ever ventured here. It was why Nicola and I had chosen the faded yellow house on the rim of the saltmarsh as our drop point.
Unfortunately, the region was no longer empty.
Mindsight reported twenty players ahead, and not just ahead, but in the very same yellow house where I hoped my money was. It could not be a coincidence, of course.
Has Nicola betrayed me?
Sadly, that seemed like a distinct possibility. But I couldnât let the thought distract me. I had more important things to worry about at the moment. Moving slowly, I peered around the corner.
Multiple hostile entities have failed to detect you.
My second look at the north side of the yellow house was no more revealing than my first short glimpse. None of the players that my mindsight reported as being inside were visible from this distance. Drawing back from the corner, I closed my eyes and refocused on the mindglows I could sense.
The players were lying motionless all along the edge of the building, and at a guess, Iâd say the nearest six were peering out of the second floorâs dirt-stained north-facing windows.
Lookouts, I concluded.
It was a good bet, too, that the other fourteen were watching the western and eastern approaches, and perhaps even the southern one from the saltmarsh.
More and more, this was looking like an ambush. But whether of Nicolaâs making or someone elseâs, I couldnât say for certain yet.
Did they see me?
I couldnât tell that either.
The yellow house was about two hundred yards away, placing the players at the very limit of my mindsight range. Shael and I hadnât been in direct line of sight for long, a couple of seconds at worst. And importantly, none of the players had altered position since Iâd spotted them.
âMichael,â Shael whispered. âTalk to me. Whatâs going on?â
I glanced his way. The bard had dropped into a crouchâunconsciously, I thoughtâbut he hadnât faded into the shadows like I had. âThere are at least twenty players lying in wait inside the house at the end of the street,â I replied, not willing to conclude yet that Iâd accounted for all the ambushers.
Shaelâs eyes narrowed. âLying in wait for whom? Us?â
âNot us. Me.â
âHow do you figure that?â he asked.
âBecause theyâre sitting right on top of where I need to go.â
The bard licked his lips. âI guess we better withdraw then and get a party together. I know more than a few players who are quite capable in a fight, and I daresay many of them are still in Nexus.â
âRetreat?â I smiled bleakly. âIâve no intention of doing that.â

2024-09-03 04:55:54 +0000 UTCYou have a point it probably would have been much better if Micheal used a different guise whenever he was traveling with the bard.

2024-09-01 16:34:43 +0000 UTCYou know what⊠you 100% right. I dunno about underworld test but now that u bring it up they wouldnât be so careless after their 1st encounter.
obiwann
2024-09-01 00:05:37 +0000 UTCIf it is the Blades, would they be careless enough to leave their minds unshielded? Or even the Riders? Both factions employed mind suppression tactics and the Blade envoy seemed to directly pick up on the mind abilities of Michael in their dealings too. After considering Nicolaâs possible involvement, I am sort of hoping this might be a possible test from the underworld thieves guild

2024-08-31 10:18:49 +0000 UTCI also assumed blades⊠but he took WAY more from the riders⊠like millions of gold. Malikors legendary set was in total probably worth 100k or more. They may have done some detective work too⊠. Thousands dead⊠they may have felt relinquishing sector without any more fighting to focus on retrieving gear and $$$ from MC might be more worthwhile. I dunno đ€·đœââïž. Very interested in upcoming chapters.

2024-08-31 10:15:25 +0000 UTCI agree whole heartedly⊠if he is gonna use diff personas⊠he should use them differently. Actus with his allies⊠someone else w/kesh and shael⊠so that if one persona is compromised he isnât compromising his entire network that was exposed to Actus or whoever.

2024-08-31 09:58:40 +0000 UTCThe Blades, or spies among them, are the only ones who could have done this. Nicola is too good for this cheesy backstab, I think. Either there was a rogue player eavesdropping on MC's negotiations with Nicola, or the Blades kept a close eye on Nicola after handing him MC's payout and the information leaked to the Riders. They'll figure who MC is through Shael, especially if there were hidden players at the quarter's entrances. Who thinks Nicola figured this out, planted an empty drop, and kept the treasure?

Use the same mimic name that leads, after investigations, to the sector where MC used it to enter his allies, check. What's next? Engage many foes to retrieve a treasure they are keeping safe.
