Transforming The Main Event Scenarios to RPG Format?
Added 2017-05-26 03:29:43 +0000 UTCHey guys,
BeerBrew here. I just wanted to get this idea out of my head - no promises here, just thinking aloud and would like to hear your input on this. I'm thinking about the format of the game's main presentation. Right now we've got your usual visual novel style backgrounds + some main characters.
What if we changed it to look like RPGs in the SNES era (think of Final Fantasy 3, Legend of Zelda, Lufia II, Secret of Mana...) sometime down the road? Or maybe that coupled with using higher-res artwork? What do you guys think? We'll keep the story, the animated characters and the animated H scenes. No gameplay controls or fancy menus yet, just the top-down angled look with characters moving about in the top-down-left-right fashion.
Thinking about it, I've got several hurdles to overcome to get to this point - sprite art needs to be done. While not necessarily needed immediately, adventure game controls and gameplay elements can be inserted in the future. And mobile performance and compatibility, yeah, that shite's a pain to think about...
Actually trying to program this is another thing because this'll be my first attempt at that, just like the visual novel "engine" you see now. Such an engine isn't readily available with the tools I'm using now, so I might have to program it in slowly.
Why did I think about this? I was thinking of pivoting our current/future visual novel games away from being a visual novel by adding depth to it or changing up the format with game elements that are familiar to gamers. As you may know, Ramen no Oujisama is - at least this is what I feel - an oddity. It's outright sexy, but because of the story, it's not so in-your-face like other pr 0n games you find in ULMF. This is why we didn't name it Kira's C*rnal Desires, F*cking-preneur, Naughty-Naughty Chef or some other weird sexualized name (but we'll probably get there lol).
If you're already familiar with how the visual novel scene is generally like, well, I'll leave it at that. lol? Ideally, we made this game with fans of visual novels in mind, but the problem is, I didn't realize there was a HUGE EFFIN' PLEATEAU to overcome in terms of the mindset that works against English Visual Novels - and an eroge at that! I'm not going to bother elaborating, but if you've dabbed in as an english visual novel developer, you'll "feel" it when trying to make your game known.
C'est la vie.
And since this is an EVN, I feel the need to distinguish it more and move it away from direct competition against other traditional visual novels, especially the ones coming from Japan.
Again, no promises. If we do try this out, it'll probably be on short games that you'll get to play just to test things out.

lol! Ok, point taken folks. ;)

As it is in a single story line it is already over an hour of game play. Although if you can program the random encounters Godhood could benefit from that type of game play. But it game play is a unique thing as well. That i think people should be asked directly about.

2017-05-27 13:41:38 +0000 UTCI strongly disagree with this change. As a fellow developer I can just imagine the hell it would be to refactor the engine to handle this RPG style gameplay. And I never saw a RPG working nicely on a mobile device. If you want to add some kind of interactive in the VN part, you can try a point-and-click approach, and add interactive elements in the places/backgrounds you already have, so you can just add more features to support it instead of redoing a lot of stuff. π€

2017-05-26 17:57:33 +0000 UTCI ll agree with this. Dont feel itll benefit this game love the feel and style thats going with ramen currently. Going down the road on a sequal or second game could be a big benefit if you want to do something different. The current style and feel especially with how the current scene is part of the appeal of a game like this
2017-05-26 07:15:37 +0000 UTCI don't think it will benefit this game. At least that's my opinion. I would save that idea for another game afterwards You can later do an RPG style game with the same characters and setting tho. Kinda like a sequel.
