The way I shrieked with glee when I saw it was THIS episode. Paul Rudd is friends (or was, I don't know, it's been 20 years) with the show's creator Rob Thomas. Thomas actually played Johnny in the clip they showed of My Pretty Pony with the two musicians together. The CW promoted the heck out of this episode when it first aired- I wish I could have gone into the episode not knowing about the special guest and experienced the surprise that you did, but that's not how marketing and advertising works. There have been some impressive guest stars on the show in a "before they were famous" kind of way, but Paul Rudd was definitely already known when this aired. Quite the get!
