I love Season 3, but this episode definitely is a low point in a great season. Not terrible, but never one I'm excited about watching again.

After they were over 18 is a different story though, I assume since they all still lived at home with their grandma that’s why he continued to stay away and only came back into their lives like a year after their grandma died. But I believe in the first episode phoebe mentions that she went to New York (pre season one) right after their grandma dies for 6 months to look for him. And after they met him in season one she kept in touch which is why she has more of a closer relationship to him than her sisters
