I don't think Jack has an egotistical need to be the hero, he's got daddy issues. His dad made him feel like he never measured up so I'm sure he's got a bit of a need to prove himself. Also he was repulsed by his dad's ideology of cold detachment so he overcorrected to overattachment. The characters on this show are complex.
