Seems the Catagas had two viable options for saving the doctor: one was replicating a synthetic genome and inadvertently unlocking the ability to create the new life forms of robots, or preserving the nervous system and hosting it in a new body.
Why not both?
The latter option still requires rest to stave of fatigue, so the doctor's body was on autopilot for most of this adventure...
