Mentally I get prepared for every destination differently. When I'm shooting in the desert I'm prepared for early morning sunrises, late sunsets, and chasing down little pockets of shade where I can the rest of the day under the cloudless skies. When I'm preparing for notoriously cloudy, and foggy places I figure I'll be able to sleep in and hike back during daylight, but that doesn't always work out.
My plan for Europe was to beat jet lag, and shoot a little bit before our Arctic Nude workshop in Iceland. With the exception of Spain I planned on hitting countries some consider dreary and I consider perfect. Then I hit the "luckiest" patch of weather England, Ireland, and Scotland have ever seen. For three weeks we didn't have a cloud or rain drop in the sky, so our relaxing shootfest turned into early mornings, and late nights shooting in "the sweet light."
I love the golden hour, but dammit I woke up every morning hoping for clouds, and then putting on my boots with a slight sadness as I realized somehow we were going to get another day of sunshine.
Every person from Scotland was elated (and sunburnt) as we marveled at what an incredible anomaly we were experiencing. Not to be defeated we created some incredible work, that looked nothing like what we had envisioned, so I will be returning for round 2 Scotland, but I think we still all win for now!
