Sierhaus on a cloudy day under the Camelia

I love the clouds, and all the saturation they bring. Soft beautiful light to play in where every angle creates an incredible photo. Sierhaus and I had been planning this shoot for months, and somehow we got lucky enough to catch one of the last truly cloudy days. The type of weather that I don't even get every year when the camellia is in bloom.

I haven't actually been shooting a ton this spring. I've diversified my interests and am just taking on less shoots than I used too, so c...

A sunny day with Vanessa Valentine

Oregon changes when they sun finally comes out. Our winter is long, wet, and ever gray, and while this creates an incredibly vibrant forest. It also can create an incredibly unvibrant disposition.

I find myself waiting for spring. Booking what shoots I can in the winter with those brave enough to venture out for 15-20 minutes in the cold gets me through the long dark months, but like the flora my schedule explodes when the temperature first goes above 60 degrees.

For those ...

Two new shoots today on the paid blog today!

I wait all year for the week that the Camelia blooms. It of course is only mildly predictable, so while I try and plan for it based on previous years it is impossible to know for sure when it will burst.

This year I managed to get two incredible shoots in during its peek. Vanessa Valentine and Sierhaus both came and embraced the beautiful moment of the bloom!

Emma Starseed What Merit Badge are we earning?

Emma and I just have what I would describe as a perfectly lined vision for images, working together, etc.

Our idea's feed off each other in a way that is hard to describe, but she will share something I will be inspired, we go back and forth and create something truly special. That's how we ended up in Vegas climbing into the red sandstone cliffs of the desert, and shooting her merit badge sash.

Finding other artists that just bounce with you inspiration wise is so special

Ravyn Alexa, Emma Starseed, Olivia Wildin, Tiffany in Nature and Nicole Vaunt for Into the Wild

Something I learned some time ago is that shoots with multiple people are hard

Something else I learned is that when they come together I absolutely love the result. So Planning an adventure with all of the incredible people listed above was high on my list for my trip down to Nevada for AVN. Initially I had only planned to do 1 on 1 shoots with each of the models, but after creating a ton of images with everybody I had found this little spot where I thought it could work so...

Vanessa Valentine in Our Forest

I've been trying to reach out and work with people a lot this winter. I realized that I need to keep being proactive and setting up shoots, and putting it out there with people I want to work with that I want to work with them.

Beginning to believe that this is always the case.

So when Vanessa said she had wanted to work with me for a while I immediately was like well hey we should make some plans! And it was an absolutely amazing shoot on a pretty cold day. We chatted for ...

In the winter forest with Vanessa Valentine

Todays full blog is from my first shoot with the incredible Vanessa Valentine. She came over back in December and we did an amazing shoot that sort of bridges The Jungle and Into the Wild

It went so well we already have another one scheduled for very soon!

Bellatrix and Vaunt in Nevada

My return to the desert didn't go as planned. I haven't been to Vegas since January 2020 and even though that was 2 months ago actually it was 5 years ago. If this is deeply upsetting information to you, than imagine my surprise to discover that my favorite spots had changed significantly. Access was now exclusively from a much further spot, the location has changed either by man or time...I'm not sure which.

I have images of the lead photo of Bella in the same location with Nicole ...

Ravyn Alexa in Las Vegas

This year got off to a great start with a trip down to Las Vegas to work with friends in the desert! I've long loved Vegas for its access to outdoors, but for the most part its just been Nicole and I exploring it with one other friend, but this time we took a car load of amazing people with us! I'm working my way through it all now, but our second day Ravyn, Emma Starseed, Olivia Wildin, Nicole and Tiffany in Nature all came out and we created a ton of beautiful images!

Linda Lan for The Jungle

Every time Linda visits us up here in Oregon is such a treat. She is an absolute ray of creative positivity, and we always get an incredible amount of work done! After shooting a couple of videos for OF we decided we wanted to run across the creek and take some photos real quick too! It was raining just a little bit and freezing cold, but we managed to shoot this entire set in a matter of maybe 12-15 minutes!

Cinder!

Sorry I'm running a little late...winter is kicking my ass. I should be doubling down and enjoying the work from autumn doubly to overcome it. I mean look how beautiful it was!

Cinder and I first started talking on twitter because of a mutual early attraction to Brian Molko, and honestly thats the type of conversation where I'm like hey we should shoot pictures! So she came down to Portland for a day and we created some beautiful images! I'm sure we will be getting up to more asap!...

Maxine Mayer for something new?

Bare with me as I fear I am repeating myself...maybe worse than fear, but know.

I've been very resistant to fantasy style photography even though most of my work I believe already has that feeling its just missing an element to transform it. I think that's largely because to actually do it well requires a fairly substantial investment when it comes to money, and investing any money into art beyond that which is required is difficult to justify.

My job has almost always been fea...

Turning point

In addition to putting together my first book of my series The Jungle...I think I am about to start something new.

Its not as big a turn for you as it probably feels for me. But I am embracing my name, where I come from, early influences, and the fact that I am actually a nerd.

Full blog and the first set will be up for paid members later today!

Working on my 4th book this winter

Sooo I'm finally taking the dive and putting together a 1st installment of my series The Jungle in book form! I have once again let a series balloon up to thousands and thousands of images of the years without releasing anything, so the culling process feels brutal.

Every book has been a learning process from the 50 models project all the way back in 2011 (?) to 2020's release of a 12 year retrospective of Into the Wild. One thing I haven't really done before is really talk about how...

Saint Arson in Malibu

It had been a long time since I went to LA to shoot anything for myself. I made the drive down earlier this year, and shot videos and even a few photos at my friends place, but I didn't make it out of the city...didn't plan anything beyond the back yard of the house I was staying in.

So there was a huge part of me wondering if this was still something I could do. Show up to a location, figure out the light, figure out the composition, figure out most importantly how to do it all safe...

Olivia Wildin in The Creek

Olivia is one of the most talented photographers I know here in PDX...we really click when it comes to shooting though, so one hot day we decided to head down to the creek and do a little shooting.

I hiked further down than I usually do and found myself tucked into some branches that created the most beautiful little window to shoot through, and compose with, and I do mean little.

Getting the focus and composition through there was hard, but I love the ones where it all came t...

Faeriere in Los Angeles

I haven't traveled to LA and shoot for years, to be honest I haven't really traveled anywhere to shoot for years at least now in a way that made me nervous. I've gone out to the coast, up to the peninsula and to the mountains, but they are very similar to home.

This trip I was worried that I had lost the part of me that can figure out a new place quickly enough to have a good shoot, luckily Faeriere was happy to be out walking in nature, and down to have a bit of an adventure to find ...

Piper Mae for The Jungle

Early spring there is a two week window in which the camellia is perfect in all of its full bloom glory...7 days with blooms on the tree, and a few following before every flower begins to bruise, and decay! If I am lucky I will get 1 or 2 cloudy days in there were it can be photographed perfectly. Bright bright saturated colors, with a lovely soft light makes for an absolutely incredible day taking photos.

Luck is not always on my side though. This die with Piper was partly cloudy, ...

Ravyn Alexa for something fantastical

A life time ago, in a small apartment in Philadelphia I shot a series Journey to The End of The Night...I was young depressed quite obviously derivative of Jan Saudek.

But we were exploring things trying to see what all we could do in a living room with next to nothing to work with. A couch, a weird knife my uncle gave me for christmas, fencing swords I got at an antique mall in Chicago, everything was focused around one prop, a person, and a wall. The first name for the series was <...

Been on a little adventure

My very good friend Icelandic Selkie was in the states for a couple of weeks, and after years of traveling Iceland with her and Nicole I wanted to show her some of my favorite spots in the United States! I was down in LA for 10 days, so Nicole and I drove up and grabbed her from Berkeley!!

I didn't really want to stay in the Bay, so we high tailed it up to Humboldt to explore the coast and Redwoods. Nicole had been working non-stop for a month, so she decided to stay back at the hote...

Nicole Vaunt...Battle Angel

I have no clue what to actually call this...Nicole asked if we could take the wings and a fantastical battle ax out to the woods and take pictures for her birthday.

For a nerdy little forest creature person I have done remarkably few fantasy style shoots over the years. I feel like maybe the last time I did was nearly a decade ago with Okami for Zivity...which is crazy

Maybe I should explore this more? I had a lot of fun doing these and figuring out how to integrate all the ex...

Cervena Fox for The Jungle 2024!!!

Ok so hear me out, I realize its perhaps ridiculous to share two shoots in one day, and probably I would be wise to spread these out, but I'm not that patient. I want to share things here as I finish them.

Cervena was here the exact same couple of days as Skyhook, and so as one shoot ended another began. I kind of feel like I have been on fire this summer! The landscape changes a little every year, but more and more I understand time of day, the canopy, the way the light falls.

Erna Burns for Into the Wild

I get asked all the time what am I thinking, or what is it that I want to do with my photography, and to be honest I'm never really quite sure what somebody is asking of me when that comes up. I'm not really a conceptual photographer. I have for a long time considered myself a portrait photographer, and I'm of the belief that every portrait is telling some sort of story.

Its impossible not too right?

So then the question is what story am I telling. For me that is always infor...
