Did I tell you this is going to be an amazing month to be a Patreon subscriber? Because this is going to be a really awesome month to be a Patreon subscriber. The past couple of months I have been shooting quite a bit...exploring a bunch of new projects, and this month I'm going to be unleashing all of that content I'm finishing up!
Sometimes it takes me a while to find the perfect edit for a group of photos. I finish up an edit, look at it the next day, and wonder what the hell sort of colors I was seeing the day prior...that is sort of how this whole thing works especially when starting a new series.
I remember in 2011 I was really happy with how I had edited the first 20 or so shoots for Temperance then I did something different, and I knew that I had 20 shoots that one day would need to be re-edited for continuities sake. It sucks, but it happens. Right around the same time a new edit clicked for my outdoor nudes, and I had to go back and redo nearly 4 years worth of work. For some of it I don't think most people would notice a huge difference, but for me I can't stand to see an old edit. My google search results still plague me with old muddy files that look nothing like my current work, but what can you do?
This all circles to Pulp! I've been struggling to find my footing here. I think every post about Pulp sort of goes the same way. "I like what I'm doing, but I don't know if this has longevity." I feel like a broken record. Its been a struggle to find the same sort of inspiration for Pulp as Temperance, and realistically these two bodies of work will be intertwined for me. I can't think of one without thinking of the other. Pulp needs a challenge for me that I'm not finding. For almost three years I never took a picture with the camera pointed directly at the subject. Of the nearly 2,000 images I shot for Temperance only about 100 were shot not through a mirror. Some were reflections bounced multiple times, but that series was like an ever evolving puzzle for me.
Pulp doesn't have the same thing going for it. Sometimes it feels too simple...too much like just creating in my own home. I love the photos, and the models really make it, but even with the mixed lighting I don't feel the same challenge, and I need that to stay interested.
What I do love about Pulp though is how important the model is too the photos. Without the added interested of complex photography the incredible talent of the people I get to work with is what really makes these images. The shots are simple, the lighting is simple, the editing is actually pretty hard, but nobody really looks at a photo and thinks that looks like difficult post production, and if they do its normally not in a good way. So really the only thing that matters is the models ability to create a sense of mood. With that the images get a purpose.
At least to me...maybe to you.
If you read this far tell me what you think...
