Seattle has been one of my favorite cities for a long time. The weather, often misrepresented as terrible, is ideal for shooting the type of photo I like to shoot. Soft light created by soft cloudy skies, and easy access to so many beautiful locations it makes my job very easy. It does get sunny though, and for my shoot with Porcelain and Sierra we had to go on a bit of adventure to get the photos I was after. Although much of it proved to be unnecessary as there was another parking lot we could have used just yards away from the location we ended up using.
Since it was a bright summer day in Seattle we decided to push our shoot to later in the day, and shoot during the golden hour rather than trying to create with the hard light of the day. We got to the park about an hour before we were planning on shooting, which turned out to be great because we walked a long long way to find the perfect place to shoot. The light in exposed places was incredibly hard but a good color, and the light in the dense forest was soft but very dim, and green, so we hiked further and further ending up on the beach the complete opposite side of the park.
Some times finding the good light is a lot like Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
Coming out of the forest and into the beach grass with its beautiful drift wood the golden hour light was soft, bright, and well balanced. We shot for 15-20 minutes with the perfect light and then it disappeared. I decided to just use my 85mm F1.4 as changing the lenses in a situation like that while not taking up too much time means getting considerably less photos.
So after all that walking we still to do the long hike back to our cars...mostly in the dark, but all in all it was a great day with some of my favorite people, and we got to make some art!
