So the trip that took about a year of planning scheduling finally happened. We land in Iceland at 5am. Exhausted we get our rental car, and drive to the Blue Lagoon for the first shoot.
As soon as I turn the corner and see the first bit of it I'm blown away. Even the lakes in the Canadian Rockies aren't this beautifully blue. Surrounded by Volcanic fields. I'm too tired for it to really sink in. I'm in Iceland! We made it. We relax in the hot water of the pool. The winter winds are so strong that rain and waves hit us like we are in the ocean. Still we spend two hours swimming around in the hot water. On our way out I scout places for tomorrows shoot.
All of our shoots in Iceland have to be fast. By all accounts the tourism industry there has exploded to unprecedented levels. Estimates for tourist visitors 2015 are already over two million. Fortunately like in many places most tourists don't stay out late, and don't really travel that far, so we managed to find many places free from people. We wake up early in the trunk of our rental car, and drive miles and miles of dirt road between locations.
The Icelandic landscape is like a dreamscape. Black sand deserts that surround you for an hour, then give way to mossy green volcanic fields. It looks like a science experiment gone wrong. The sort of thing your mind pieces together from memories of all the things you've seen. Much of the time we are too overwhelmed by exhaustion, the colds we caught camping out in cold weather, or the punishment our bodies are taking for the photos we want to create. Nicole went above and beyond to create these.
Climbing freezing cold basalt columns at 6am in 40-50mph winds, posing on pieces of ice thousands of years old, enduring massive Atlantic Ocean waves, I honestly can't believe her dedication to the creation of the image. I am incredibly lucky to be able to spend two weeks exploring and creating with someone that inspires me so much, and whom I love even more.
I'd love to write the story behind every one of these photos, but I'm still coming down from the trip. Still swept up in us having taken our first steps towards our goal. Please feel free to comment, ask questions, anything and I will take the time to answer!
For this blog entry I'd like to let the images speak for themselves just a moment.
