Mika Lovely and Nicole Vaunt for Temperance on Dropbox
Added 2014-12-11 20:11:40 +0000 UTCI have been exploring eroticism through photography for almost as long as I have known how to use a camera. Since finishing my series Journey To The End of The Night, and embarking on 50 Models 50 States it had sort of taken a back burner. Living in a new place for me means learning how to be creative within the limitations of that space all over again. Before where I had giant windows, natural light, and 18 foot ceilings I now found myself with much smaller rooms, and primarily working with studio lighting. Its a challenge to say the least. My art is shaped as much by my ideas as it is by the space.
Since moving I've become obsessed with mirrors. Its for a lot of reasons. Shooting through a mirror creates a voyeuristic separation from the scene for the viewer, and it also doubles the distance between the model and I allowing me to use longer lenses and better isolate my subject.
This shoot with Mika and Vaunt I switched back and forth sometimes shooting a reflection of their reflection using two mirrors, and sometimes simply shooting through 1. While in camera the double reflection seemed to look cool it created a very serious fun house effect that seemed to distract far too much from the work. I also struggled with lighting. Keeping a light controlled enough to be out of a photo is difficult enough in a small space, so keeping it from splashing onto a reflective surface is even more difficult. In the end I'm still very happy with how it turned out.
I'm definitely looking forward to exploring this series even more down the line. Building more sets, adding more mirrors, and seeing where things go.
