Velkoth's Lair [29x52]

In the earliest days of elven lore, Velkoth took the form of a hale and handsome homemaker. He reigned as the god of honesty and duty and served as a doting husband to the goddess Meyelle. Elves revered the lovers and followed their guidance. Love one another, enjoy the pleasures of simple comforts, and always share generously in times of bounty.
One day, a slovenly old man wandered into the realm of the gods. He spoke with each elven deity and asked for a small favor: some sheepskin, a horn of wine, a place to rest. Without fail, each god granted this man his wish. When, at last, the beggar came to the home of Velkoth and Meyelle, the latter gave the man a bowl of hearty soup and invited him to stay for supper. Velkoth, however, saw through the beggar’s disguise. This was no humble vagrant, but the lord of all creation, Wynken, in disguise.
Velkoth could not abide by this duplicity, and he would not share his home with this god who had made everything from stars to seed and sea. There is no being across time and space who has ever needed less. God or not, Wynken did not seem a worthy recipient of Velkoth’s charity.
Velkoth knew this to be some game—some trick!—but he misunderstood what was being tested. Meyelle and all the other elven gods knew, too, that Wynken was testing them, but she shared anyway. “We give not because it is necessary,” she proclaimed, “but because it is right.” Velkoth could have shown generosity, but instead, he only affirmed a cleverness that was never in doubt.
Once slighted, Wynken revealed himself. If Velkoth would not share his home with the lord of creation, Wynken would share nothing with him. He made of Velkoth’s name a curse and cast the so-called god of honesty and duty out of heaven and into the farthest depths of the dark sky.
