In part 4, we encountered the strange Angel of Atrophy.
In part 5 we entered its mouth, with its maze-like tongue.
In part 6 we descended into its stomach, meeting the swallowed Ancient Key Dragon.
The Ancient Key Dragon contained a chest within its chest. Our idea was that players would enrage the Key Dragon, steal the correct key from its key breath and use it to unlock and the chest.
... Or just sneak in through the key hole.
In Part 7 you enter the chest.
The light is dim, the smell of dust and rot fill the air. Cages hang by chains from the ceiling, draped in sackcloth. Within you see the skeletal fingers and sunken eyes of wizards. Not necessarily elderly, but withered, like rags wrung out too many times. They whisper enchantments that you know to be incomplete. Meaningless part-spells, garbled, and mis-remembered. Along the bars of their cages their broken finger nails have scratched out scrambled runes without order or rhythm.
As you approach them they ask about half-forgotten familiars, a distant fondness holding onto a memory that no longer remains. Their hands mimicking the flap of a ravens wings. Or with a dry mouth scarcely mumbling a mimicry of a cat's miau.
The chest has a pull to it, a gravity, a long slow death rattle. A sigh with no gasp of breath to follow. The prisoners within have their memories sweated from them, pulled inexorably downwards, until all their magical knowledge is desiccated away. Their collected magical knowledge is pooled and whirled down into a dark chamber below. Their mana is visible, suspended in the air. It is a slow sapping, their magic and memories sculptural and suspended in the air.
Only occasionally the stillness is broken by screams as spells dislodge in the prisoner's brains and the last of a wizard's mana runs dry.
Cze's concept for the wizard prison as a whole was monsters and phenomenon that are recursive and regressive. Like a dream within a dream, an infinity mirror, or a cascade of monsters eating one another. What the true reality is, is obscured, in this way magic is flattened and infinitesimal. That feels like a true prison for a powerful wizard.
