What VTT do you use?

We asked a similar question to this last year and we were curious to know how the answers have changed in that time.

We're currently expanding the Patreon so that all the maps are available as printable PDFs for the $5 Master Cartographer tier.

We've also had requests to add a tier that makes the maps VTT ready with the all walls and lighting already set up. Currently this is most likely for Foundry VTT but we want to know what our community is actually using right now.

Does that sound like a good idea to you? Would you be willing to up your pledge for that functionality? What other options would you like to see? Any thoughts on the matter would be welcome!

P.S. Two days left on our Twitter Icewind Dale contest. Also two days left on our map remixing contest. And for those haven't seen it yet our Legends of Omeria kickstarter is still ongoing!

We use TTopRPG 2.0 it is FREE and very easy to use. It doesn't try to do everything but it does great at what it does do. It is very easy to build your own macro buttons.

Kurt Stoffer

I know I'm a bit late but if it helps in roll20 I use the dynamic lighting system to do doors, when you draw in your LOS blocking if you do the doors separate in a different color it's pretty easy to switch over to the dynamic lighting view and delete them to open up new rooms and stuff :) it's a work around but hope that helps

Chase L

I'm using (and developing) Tableplop. It's brand new but meant to be an easier to use VTT.

SummonToast

I'm using Roll20 in my online campaigns but have to admit that I'm not too happy with some things. Astral looks like a good candidate and a friend of mine is leading a round there and is very happy with it. My biggest issues are actually with map and asset handling. When I create a campaign, I'd like to have more possibilities to organize the maps. Groups and multiple levels would be great. Doors, for gods sake, why aren't there any door mechanics in Roll20? Yeah, things like this.

Norman Köhring

Let's Role is in alpha but very promising. I've actually used a couple of your maps in a recent actual play on that platform :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ag78nHJbZw

Julien Pirou

Tableplop, way easier and more accessible than most of the other VTT's I've stumbled over, easy for both the players and the DM

Two bananas in a trenchcoat

I use 'Map Tool' by RPTools

Mac Chambers

Thanks for the feed back....

John Pierce

I used Roll20 for a while and it worked for my games. Recently I switched over to Foundry though and it's amazing. So many things that you'd need to get a premium account for in Roll20 is already implemented in Foundry or you can get it as a free module. And the one time payment will be cheaper in a few months than paying for premium in Roll20. And only the DM needs the Foundry key. So in the long run it will be very cheap, if you plan to play for more than a couple of months.

A while ago my buddy built a wooden frame to contain a 32in tv that sits flat and I display the maps there. When we were forced into going remote, I decided to take the DSLR I had lying around and now I stream a video feed of the minis on the TV to twitch. Works out pretty well and everyone seems happy with it.

Matthew R Dionne

Been looking into VTT, looking at Foundry, roll20, Astral... Trying to find the least expensive and one that my players would not have to pay for...

John Pierce

Rollz.org

GenderMeowster

We use Dynamic Dungeons since it also plays animated maps. He has a patreon of his own, should check it out!

Side Quest Press

Since I am rebuilding my map library, I am sifting through all the map artists I am supporting on Patreon and to put it mildly: It's really a hassle to get downloads from Patreon. If the integration of added walls and lights is the same frustrating experience, I will never consider upping my pledge to a higher amount because walling/lighting is just needed for the few maps I really need in contrast to the work it takes to download/ install / configure it from Patreon until it's in Foundry. It would be a different story if the usual map artists would collab and offer a joint platform that would make it easy to subscribe and get the maps into the game from within the game.

Sebastian Will

I started using Foundry a few weeks ago and I’m loving it! And using your maps with dynamic lighting and walls is a joy. I would definitely love more collaboration with Foundry

Pavel Alba

Roll20 for now, though I hope to transition to something else when I can afford a better computer

C. Daetwyler

I'd use Astral all the time if it had a compendium/better character sheets for newbies. Maps are just so easy in their system with some cool features. Because of that I don't think making VTT ready resources is necessary unless you go the extra mile by adding traps and other triggers. I've also looked at Foundry though would be hesitant to switch because the compendium is just so handy and don't want to re-buy. BTW, I use your maps in like every game I run and get compliments all the time.

Lindsey Dwyer

Was a Roll20 user switched to Foundry - Will never look back !!

Courtney De Barros

Tabletop simulator is the one i use. It's like playing at a normal table, but you can spawn in any map at any size whenever you want!

Marius Speider Sørum Moe

Yep if you google Owlbear Rodeo it should be the first result (I would post the link but I'm not sure if I'm allow to do that here) :)

Mitchell McCaffey

I use Roll20 and yes, I'd be willing to subscribe to a tier that includes lighting for it! I've already paid for Roll 20's digital versions of campaigns, volos guide & the monster manual.. so I wouldn't really be able to switch to anything else

HappyCampr

Google Slides. I just give all my players editing permission so they can move their tokens.

SvenOgre

Encounter Plus represent! There are dozens of us!

Mr. C G

Foundry has become our Go to. It just works. Last gane was 11 party members and 25 badies and we had no technical issues.

AlexTheMapMaker

This sounds interesting! Is it available for the public to use?

Wanda

How do you print your maps?

Wanda

Tableplop! It's super lightweight, but acts like having tiles on a table.

Jordan Chaloner-Moore

Like my audio tracks randomly cutting out or just not playing at all (this happens consistently). One of our games a few sessions back was completely bugged and token movements weren't updating for my players. Webcam feeds will randomly disconnect and general issues with server lag. I've paid for the $9.99 monthly subscription for a few years now and now that there are some strong competitors catching up I'm investigating those.

Jessie Backoff

I'm in the process of moving over to Foundry, but still use roll20 for one game.

Josh Rodell

I would happily up my contribution for VTT maps with lights and walls built in =D - I use Roll20 but the comments about Foundry make me want to check it out.

Luke Garrison

I’m a normie that uses Roll20 but I’m intrigued by the comments about Foundry.

Hyperlexic

like what sort of issues?

Hyperlexic

Thanks :) We've been working on it for a couple of months now and I've been able to use a few of your maps with my players and they've all loved them

Mitchell McCaffey

Was using Roll20 but switched to foundry and I'm so happy with it.

GloriousGe0rge

I've never heard of Owlbear Rodeo but it has the best name possible.

Cze and Peku

That's not always possible, sometimes the lines will not align. And why put in extra work when you can have ungridded maps?

AyuVince

I use Owlbear Rodeo and your maps work great, it’s like Google Drawing or Microsoft Whiteboard but built with D&D in mind. Oh and you don’t need an account and it’s also free (I’m also one half of the dev team for it so it was built to work with maps like yours)

Mitchell McCaffey

roll20 on a tv in person

Scarlet T

I use Sketch and push tokens around on a map while broadcasting my window (so what you are already doing is fine!)

Karew

We use discord with MS Whiteboard

TheDapperPenguin

Gimp and a flatscreen tv.

Rob Cantermen

Started with Roll20 but it really sucked compared to real games. Now playing at Astral, with cool extra features I might just wanna stay there tbh :D

Dániel Mezö

I will never look at Roll20 ever again after running D&D5 in Foundry. It has so many QoL features and modules that playing and running games become much easier and fun.

Alex Phenomen

Moved to Foundry after using Roll20 for a while and haven’t looked back. It’s honestly crazy how much better Foundry is for our games

M Dawg

Legend.

Kai G.

I use Tabletop Simulator. I had a question, actually. I typically make 3D versions of the maps I use in my campaign. How comfortable would you be with me making those 3D versions of your maps available in the TTS workshop page? I'd give appropriate attribution, of course.

Peter Lapp

Roll20, but I've been looking into Foundry ever since you announced your contest prize. Roll20 has had an increasing amount of issues and I don't feel great about paying the subscription anymore.

Jessie Backoff

It’s free, it’s easy, and anyone with a Gmail has immediate access

Bubblelazer

Bubblelazer

Depending on the situation, I might just share it in Discord. But usually Roll20.

Kyle Maxwell

I use Roll20 and will most likely continue to do so as I find their LFG mechanism the best one out there for recruiting/finding players.

Catherine Chase

I've used pretty much every VTT on the planet. Arkenforge is the only one that lets me stitch together a dozen 4K video files into a seamless experience that I can run on a good laptop and a 55" TV.

Loyd Blankenship

Roll20 until I can game live with people again. Then I will print the maps.

Brett Abbott

I've been using Roll20 but I'm slowly learning how to use Foundry VTT - it's a really great program so far.

Chris Bomford

I actually just do a screen share of Photoshop.

Eliot Miller

I'm too broke to use anything but R20 but if my financial situation changed I would rethink that as we have had a lot of issues with R20.

Shin Ingram

Woah! Sweet! I somehow missed that. Thanks for the tip!

Braedon Lowey

We started using DM tools because it is free to use but I just got my Foundry license and the next campaign will be on Foundry. It integrates so well with DnD Beyond and is easy to use.

Christian Reinhard

You can edit the size of the grids in Roll20. Just match the grid size to the map.

Varnell McGee

Roll20 with an online group. Since Roll20 has its own grid, ungridded maps would be nice, as well as layouts that can be combined with the Dynamic Lighting feature.

AyuVince

Roll20 as it's the only one that semi-works with a screen reader currently and one of my players is blind. When we play in person, I project the maps and use tactile additions for easy navigation.

Mika

I use a 50" tv table that I then video to the 'group' via Google Hangouts. I like to use a mix of digital and physical media.

Stuart Collins

Foundry now. Still have Roll20 subscription for one old campaign but have been supporting Foundry for 16 months and love it.

Matthew Halnon

Encounter+ now has web view so you don't have to switch if you like Encounter+ or you can stream it via Discord, Zoom etc. I use AirServer to stream it to my Mac and share it via Discord. Others I know run the Mac version and just share the second screen.

I love the maps, but adding the walls for dynamic lighting is a huge chore on r20 (special shoutout to thieves guild map, it was a labour of love). I usually don't bother, which is a shame because it's great for immersion (and messing with the players who charge forward).

Phil Fernandes

My friends and I have been playing games over Skype for around 4 years and when I started DMing I decided to use Photoshop and simple share my second screen.

Andrew Williams

I'm using Encounter+ right now but I'll be starting an online campaign later this year and will likely use Roll20 or Foundry for that. Support for walls and stuff would be so rad

Braedon Lowey

I am part of the DWB D&D server and run at least a game a week for the community. All games posted on that server must be run on Roll20 because it's the major sponsor. I haven't gotten into using Dynamic lighting simply because of the amount of prep it would take to apply it to some of the maps you guys release. This isn't a knock on your maps, however. My players LOVE the maps I use. Whenever I have a new player in a session they always comment on how cool they are. If the Dynamic lighting was already set up, however, I would definitely use it. I'd probably up my pledge from $5 to $10 if the lighting was included in the $10 pledge.

DM Nors

Foundry ftw! My GM just switched over for all his campaigns and we couldn't be happier. More reliable than roll20 for the easy stuff, and the advanced feature roll out is soooo much quicker than Fantasy Grounds (how long we watched Soon(tm) for their Unity solution).

siliconsaint

Oh my God if I had the money I would print them professionally for sure

Ben Hallhuran

Atm we are using Roll20 as our vtt, but we will switch to Foundry, which I only found through you guys. Thanks a lot!

Philipp Siering

Would definitely increase pledge for roll20 maps with light and walls already set up

Mark Rottenberg

I am mainly using Roll20 for my current campaign since I started it there, but I will most certainly try to get Foundry calibrated at some point for a future campaign.

Paul Blank

I use Premiere Pro into aTV at my table to provide seamless transitions and make sure that all of my maps maintain a cohesive aesthetic.

Cameron Holley

Roll20 has been my go-to for years, but I just got a license for Foundry because it looks promising and I wanted to support it for future use. Friend of mine uses Maptool for her game and it seems to work fine for the most part too!

Aaron Ford

Also, I'll be on the Discord for a while so if anyone wants to message me in real time, head over there.

Cze and Peku

I would love for the walls and lighting to be set up already in Foundry VTT, and I'm glad that Foundry VTT is getting some traction!

Guillermo
