POD 138: Three perspectives on 7-hydroxymitragynine

In this episode I describe my own impressions on the multibillion dollar industry that has emerged around the new-ish opioid 7-hydroxymitragynine and speak with two industry insiders, Soren Shade who works as a kratom leaf vendor and policy reformer and Dr. Ahmed Alford who has studied the chemistry and pharmacology of natural Kratom alkaloids and their synthetic derivatives and has worked with the 7-hydroxymitragynine grey market.

Dr. Alford spoke a bit about this throughout the episode, at the end he speaks on offering to clean up kilos from producers if they had easy to remove impurities. For some reason I think he mentioned chlorinated impurities, perhaps from DCM used as solvent.

Any info on residual solvents found in many 7oh grey market tablets? Many of these pills smell like straight Acetone, Ethanol/Methanol etc. and most 7oh vendors don’t release solvent testing to the public. Been a few scandals of Methanol showing up in 3rd party tests. How dangerous are residual solvents in supplements/grey market chemicals? Also, I’ve found it to be near equally equivalent to Morphine, rather than Heroin, in potency.

Hey Hamilton could you speak on the reported effects of hair loss in chronic Kratom users? There seems to be NO official research on this, but countless anecdotal reports online. I myself have experienced this and was the main reason why I discontinued use. What could be the mechanism of action there?
