Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 4 Reaction- The Land Where Souls Rest (YouTube Version)

Simple question... if it was so easy to clear the beach, why did it take them so long?! Why not just get it done and then hang out longer if you want to?

Yeah, I wouldn't look forward to faster pacing. I think the whole point is to slow down and enjoy the company of others enjoying the beauty of the show.

At the end of the reaction Sarah mentioned that it was a bit tough reacting to Frieren due to the slow pace of the show, and I can totally see where she's coming from. I think the best way to watch/engage with Frieren is by enjoying the episodes for what they are and commentating on the referential subtext throughout each episode instead. There is A LOT of hidden subtext in scenes and interactions throughout Frieren. They often reference past moments in the show and interesting topics in real life too if you look deeper into the meaning of what they're getting at. The pacing IS quite slow and remains so throughout the entire season, but I actually think that's what makes it so excellent; It gives the watcher time to breath and engage with the ideas that it's playing with.

I find it interesting that Adam thinks that it's odd that everyone are being altruistic towards Frieren and it should have been the other way around given her life span. But in saying that, you are applying the reasoning of a mortal being to someone who is immortal. From an immortal being perspective whats the point in trying to make someone elses life better when it will be so short anyway? It's as if us human would make a tremendous effort to make a butterfly's life better, it'll die in a couple of days anyway so whats the point? And thats exactly what Frieren said about taking an apprentice in the past or when she asked Flamme why she cared so much about a tree she will never see grow. And I think this is the whole theme of the show actually. We tend to view Frieren as someone gifted because she's basically immortal and we envy her for the endless possibilities that she has, when in fact the ones gifted in the show are the others who, tanks to the fact that they know they will die soon, are able to nurture meaningfull connections with others, make efforts to do something that will only benefit the next generation just because someone else has probably done it before for them too. And also appreciate the small things in life. It's the same concept that you see in Lord of the rings and in the Silmarillion. In the LOTR Lore the elves are immortal, powerful and almost allknowing, but it's said that humans are in fact the favourite sons of Iluvatar (wich is the deity who created the world) and to them he gave the most prescious gift wich is their mortality. All of Frieren companions know that, Flamme knew that and they want her to understand it cause in fact Frierien until now as actually lived a solitary life exactly because of how long she lives.

Its going to get better with the progession, just the beginning is very slow.
