It's something we appear to be neurologically wired for although the wiring may not take place until you're about a year old. It varies in degree and can be overcome - perhaps Mob is an example of that. Politically conservative people appear to have a much stronger response than more liberal people and respond more to negative messaging. It's linked negatively to happiness/. Some work studying its impact in economics led to a Nobel Prize. I think both Sarah and Adam are right.. It's part of being human, but some can overcome it. This is far from my field, but I managed a group of anthropologists, psychologists and linguists for about five years and the topic came up frequently.
