A little riff that I wrote in DAEAC#E capo 4. It's a short riff and it's pretty easy to pick up, but it's tricky to get it really clean. Definitely try learning it!

Been a while since I've done one of these but here's a nice little chord progression in DAEAC#E. The shapes here are pretty user friendly which is nice. Mostly focusing on voicings based on the bottom 3 strings. Enjoy!

The PDF tabs to a very short reel that I posted today. I love these chords and playing them higher up with CAPO 6 makes them a lot more user friendly. Try them out!

A little riff that I conjured up to work on my hybrid picking skills. This line is a bit tricky to learn but is a great workout and lots of fun to play once you've got it. Hope you enjoy!

See attached for two documents.
I've been getting more into playing with harmonic minor and its modes. Attached are 1) a file outlining some good "power chord" type 7th chords that put the 5th in the bass. Very chunky and offers a familiar aesthetic. File 2) demonstrates a chord progression using some interesting and very mathy sounding chords for harmonic minor. If you mine deep enough you can find some recognizable shapes from the world of major. Maybe a bit of an Animals As Leaders v...

A quick supplement for an upcoming lesson covering where to use sus2 chords in your scale. To play this voicing diatonically, you can use it off of scale degrees 1-2-4-5-6 in your major scale.
I've just chosen to provide voicings for the E+A string as the voicings off the other strings are less practical / playable.

Here are the diagrams from my new video that explores many voicings for Maj7sus2 in standard tuning. You can watch the video here: https://youtu.be/EwBSX-EMlqw
Many of these voicings are movable and were created by exploring playable inversions of two initial Maj7sus2 voicings based off of the E string. I tried to take the initial voicings and create inversions up as many octaves as possible.
The technique used t...

A look at the chords that are used in the song Bubble Dream. It's mostly your standard shell voicings and drop 3 chords but there are some unique shapes in there as well. Hope you enjoy!

Another important set of basic guitar chord vocabulary. These are quite easy to play, but for whatever reason, are less commonly known.
The idea is to take your basic 1-3-7 shell voicing and reorder it as 1-7-3. This creates a bit more space in the voicing which, in turn, creates a more mellow sound.
Since they're easy to play, they are great in riffs. Try to individuate the notes etc. If you like CHON, i'd definitely say you should learn these!
Cheers,
Trevor

One of the best things you can do with a shape you like is to sequence it diatonically through a scale. Doing so helps you to find related sounds within the key. Here's one of my favourite shapes in standard tuning, taken through the scale.
Enjoy!

Some really nice chord shapes that I've been using in my writing in DADF#AD. Some of them are practical, some of them are a little crazy (but do able). All very pretty sounds at least.

Some fun shapes for you to try in standard tuning. Similar look to a shell voicing but far less jazzy. These voicings lend really well to distorted guitar tones and they cut through very nicely.

A new chord progression idea for DAEAC#E
I wanted tor try something with more "out" chords and thought this idea ended up being pretty cool. Some chords of interest are the b7 major, b6 major and taking the 6th chord of the key, making it a sus chord, and then resolving to a major instead of a minor.
Hope you enjoy!

Something I'm working on for a new reel.
These are some quick examples of ways that you can take very conventional open chords, and turn them into chords that sound great for math rock. Sometimes it's just a matter of moving one or two fingers to another spot on the fretboard.

A fairly nice starting set of chords for DAEAC#E tuning. These focus on interval sequences (3rds, and 5ths) on strings 5 and 6.
Basically, the idea is you take an interval shape (like 3rds) and you sequence it through your major scale until you have a series of chords. They sound really nice and are super easy to play.
Definitely learn them if you like 'Tiny Moving Parts'

Hey everyone,
Hope you've all had a great holiday and new year! Just wanted to pass on two documents here that cover some basic sus2 and maj7sus2 shapes in standard tuning.
For maj7sus2, this is a different chord than a maj9 sound. Essentially, imagine a maj9 chord, but without the 3rd.
Maj7sus2 = 1-2-5-7
Maj9 = 1-3-5-7-9
By omitting that one note, while treating it as its own independent sound, we get something that sounds pretty interesting and more amb...

An arrangement of the 4-5-6-3 progression done using my favourite chord shapes. I take a few liberties / deviate harmonically in the last 8 bars, but the chord and bass line sound is still close enough to the original that I don't think it messes up the sentiment too much.
Enjoy!

An overview of the most important chord sets for standard tuning. I usually treat these as a must known starting basis for my students. Make sure you've got these 100% down before progressing to more. Why? There's a lot that you can do with this vocab if you've got full mastery over it.

Hey everyone, this is the supplement to a video that I'm releasing tomorrow. The video focuses on these shapes, but also goes into some depth about how to create shapes like this. The basic idea is to take a shape that you already know, and add open notes to it. Some of the success is key dependent but this kind of experimentation can lead to some really unique sounds.

Hey everyone, sorry for the lack of posts lately. I've been dealing with a hand injury which has kept me from playing guitar for almost 3 months! Its mostly healed now and I'm back to my usual thing.
Here's a new set of chords from an upcoming video on drop D. My approach was to treat drop D as an open D type tuning. These chords are arranged for D major.
Hope you enjoy!
