Combining what Claudia said to Violet, that might be the reason he didn't want to come back -- he is still trapped in the trauma of the war. Then he chose to disappear, because Violet will remind him of the war and his guilt.

This is one point that didn’t come across — and he wouldn’t want that. And this is the one reason, they don't come back to laiden and stay on that island. I'm on team love this movie!!
