It's an intriguing question for the story to pose to us about moral ambiguity and the difference of perspective. The problem is the game bends over backwards to force an answer on us and tell us how to feel. I could go on endlessly about the logic flaws and false equivalences but it really boils down to I love Joel and Ellie, and hate Abby and her crew. Nothing this game does changes that at all.

They try to tell this story of Abby is only a villain until you see her perspective but no she's still objectively a villain. The masterful craft in the technical aspects of the storytelling is the only thing that holds this game together somewhat.

I find it so impactful to experience that scene, especially when he said that he went through a lot to get that tape for her. Ohhh the water works..

He knew he couldn’t stop her after trying to talk her out of it and figured the only way she’d ever let it go would be if he took them all out before she had a chance. The stuff you’re referring to that you think supports your point… we can’t discuss here for spoiler reasons 😄

2025-01-20 17:03:23 +0000 UTCIf he never cared about vengeance, then I don't see why he went to Seattle by himself and slaughtered through many WLF and tortured them for info on where Abby was to kill. I believe he said, "No he wouldn't" just to try to convince Ellie to not go because he wants to protect her as you said, but if he didn't care about vengeance, he wouldn't have gone to Seattle in the first place by himself, he would've stayed to make sure Ellie didn't go, plus the other parts of the game not seen yet by Kai support my point.

I reckon he reconciled himself with the idea that Joel was always headed for this kind of fate after witnessing him come apart after Sarah’s death. I think he loved his brother but sees Ellie as his legacy and knows Joel would want her protected. Remember his argument with Ellie? She said about Joel ‘if it was one of us he’d be halfway to Seattle by now’ and Tommy says ‘No he wouldn’t’

2025-01-19 09:04:29 +0000 UTC@kai. You should watch the trailer for part 2. The “dingle dangle” you spoke about when she meets up Jessie is because in the trailer they had joel in as Jessie. In an attempt to hide Joel’s death they focused on the game play scenes where Joel was present. And even switched out a few charecter scenes with him.

2025-01-18 23:00:52 +0000 UTCTommy's sudden switch: When Tommy reunites with Ellie and Jesse at the theater, he becomes acutely aware that he's no longer just responsible for his own vendetta - he now has to protect Ellie, Jesse, and the pregnant Dina. This shifts his priorities from revenge to ensuring their safety (in the beginning remember he was trying to make sure Ellie did not even go). In the first game, Joel also said Tommy was always trying to be the hero, which is why he was in the army before the infected, and the fireflies after. Also by this point, Tommy has: Murdered and fought his way through Seattle Tortured WLF members Witnessed the toll the violence was taking on Ellie

2025-01-18 08:15:35 +0000 UTCAbout the tv series - tl;dr; yeah, definitely check this out, if not for the channel, at least for yourself :) As you mentioned yourself, Ellie's cast was controversial, and most of the ppl were concern, including myself, but after watching first couple of episode, I was like, ok, that would work. Bella looks nothing alike as original actress, but I think she played really well and nailed the essence of the character. Plus it is still HBO top class show, so if some some reason you won't like how they made the characters etc (which I doubt tbh), as a filmmaker I sure you still will enjoy it :)

Sometimes they kind of give stuff away lol, but they're not always right! Also I think reacting to the show would be interesting. I'd like to see what you think of the differences. While the show is definitely prestige television, the game somehow feels higher quality to me in how its "shot" and produced. At least check out the first couple of episodes imo. Looking forward to pt 3, cheers!

Not only is it one of my favorite stories in games, some scenes in it are drop dead gorgeous. And it’s also made by the same developers as the last of us, so I think it would be a great contrast to see how they have changed in their story telling since then and the last of us part 2.

2025-01-18 01:51:31 +0000 UTCSo true. And Kai the video cut out the part that there was a dog guarding the Aquarium that Ellie puts down pretty brutally before she gets to the room with Mel and Owen. So there was more context of the aquarium that you did not see due to the cutting out of a lot of gameplay but also that moment was meant to feel rushed I think due to the pure adrenaline Ellie was running on having barely survived the boat loss in the ocean and still running on vengeance and then everything just falls apart after she realizes what she has done. It breaks her. Yet she still cannot stomach Abby being allowed to live. Can't wait for the next video!

We shouldn't have even been here in the first place

Once she, Dina and Jesse showed up I think he immediately wanted to get them home, I don’t think revenge was ever his main motivation.

2025-01-17 22:09:28 +0000 UTCSome interesting behind the scene knowledge is that in the aquarium, when Ellie kills Owen and Mel, after she realizes that Mel is pregnant, when Tommy shows up you hear him call Ellie's name, but the game makers also layered Joel's voice over Tommy's so when she's hearing it she thinks it's Joel for a moment.

Manages to capture the same atmosphere as the game while making some well thought out minor changes. Plus, what can you say about episode 3? Some of the best tv ever made. There’s also no need to worry about Bella Ramsay as Ellie, she nails it

The gameplay provides more insight into the brutality of the experience. Unlike the first game, NPCs call out their friends’ names when they are killed. Dogs mourn their owners’ deaths by whimpering. I can see what you’re saying about Tommy, but I can’t say anything without spoiling, so let’s see what you think once you’re done. You should definitely watch the show. Bella Ramsey’s acting was incredible, especially in the later episodes.

Who knows what he has gone through during this, he left earlier than them on this solo sniper hunt mission, telling Maria in the letter to stop Ellie from coming after him. He does not necessarily know/think that they left Jackson as well. Suddenly Jessie finds him, I'm assuming Jessie would have told him about Ellie and Dina and possibly the pregnancy situation. So I can understand him being a bit down about the revenge on Abby, but still taking it as priority to take Ellie and the rest of them back to Jackson to safety.

It works better with the dog scene and the build up of tension. Also, interesting point on Tommy. I’d say he’s always been less of a vengeful soul than Joel, and his motivations are more around looking after the living than avenging the dead. But his arc may not be finished 😉

2025-01-17 19:13:14 +0000 UTCTo answer the question about Tommy I think it comes down to what happens between those cutscenes because Tommy was days ahead of them and wreaking havoc. After torturing people and killing so many people and making it out alive I think he realizes how lucky they are to have still had all four of them up until that moment and with everyone but Abby being dead he is weighing the pros and cons and getting the last one out of like eight when seven are dead at the risk of killing the people closest to you its not worth it. I think that's what's going through his mind.

2025-01-17 18:56:59 +0000 UTCTo answer your earlier question about Joel in the hospital it's funny because I'm realizing through this reaction that you're getting a fairly sanitized version of the journey by not seeing the gameplay. Not that you're not seeing you know the dark and violent nature of it but just the sheer amount of death. Joel killed no less than 30 people at the hospital and that's probably undershooting it.

Because I think this is the first time I've seen someone get to the Nora and Mel sections and be satisfied with the violence. The amount of people you are put in the position to kill before you get to Nora makes torturing Nora and being forced to press square to torture Nora so excessive. Then you get to Mel and I remember just thinking "Ellie slow down stop stop stop stop stop" and then she kills Mel and her pregnant stomach is revealed and I felt sick... And I love dark stories I love this story, there were just moments when I didn't know if I was going to cry or throw up

2025-01-17 18:15:35 +0000 UTCOn that scene with Owen and Mel feeling rushed, I think it's partially down to the fact that a lot of gameplay leading up to it was cut. You spend ages roaming through the aquarium, finding little hints and clues as to who might be there and it's all building up to facing Abby. Revenge is at hand. Then in like a minute it's all pulled out from under you, Ellie just killed a pregnant woman. She crossed a line that feels uncrossable. Both games have such a sense of "the world can turn upside down in an instant". Like with Henry and Sam. It only takes a minute for it to all fall apart.

As you hinted at, the dissonance between what we know and what we and the characters feel is so touching. That cycle of violence, the processing of trauma and the way the game makes us sit with these uncomfortable moments are what make it so so special to me.

I really think you would enjoy watching it because of your background in film and because you can compare it to the video game. Okay, I will stop gushing.

2025-01-17 17:41:46 +0000 UTCPedro Pascal was also an excellent choice to play Joel. He brings so much depth to the character, and the relationship he and Bella have as Joel and Ellie feel so real. They did a fantastic job with casting. The actress who voices Marlene in the video game also plays her as the character in the show, and many of the voice actors from the game also have cameo roles, including Troy Baker (Joel), Ashley Johnson (Ellie), and Jeffrey Pierce (Tommy).

They played Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones, and they have an exceptional range of acting abilities. You should really give it a try.

And maybe you are right about the tommy being so ok with leaving without killing abby. The next parts blew my mind and gave me a totally different perspective about storytelling, i think you are going to love it
