Kind of a half-update - one more small bit to go for Volume 2. I'm frustrated that I'm not done with the whole thing yet, but I figured I could at least share this much in the meantime.

While on the topic of smaller updates, this represents basically one book page. Most of the prior updates have actually been comprised of 2-3 book pages mashed together. I have a preference for doing larger updates for the sake of story flow, but what do you guys think? As I'm considering my approach to Volume 3 and how best to keep Patrons happy, would you prefer more frequent updates of this size? Are the larger but slower updates more satisfying to read? If you have an opinion, please feel free to share it!

Gorgeous work <3'

Kylie Johnston

The quality of this comic -- writing and art -- has been so beautifully *right*, that I'd like you to do whatever makes you happy and satisfied with the work. Kind of assuming that's what you've been doing, so, yeah, keep it up, please.

California Cat

Your most welcome! It's always lovely to get your feedback Tracy! Oh boy with the power of digital painting these days you have a endless options to create certain effects with minimal effort - when done respectfully it will create a lasting impression on the illustration (in almost half the time). It's awesome to hear your process, and man that penciling method - you guys were hardcore! The effort you put into the details really pay off on every page. Regarding the trip - thank you! I've been to the States and Canada back in 2007 & 2011 (month long holidays) and from 2013-2014 (studying foundations at the Academy of Art University in San Fran, one of the best times of my life) and now I'm back again, yay! X3 As I mentioned in a previous post I have plans to check out central to east coast and perhaps follow the trail of the Prohibition Era America, I would love to get your suggestions on an itinerary in the future! Now then, two more things to share before I head off! The two Mitzy's! https://scontent.fper1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfl1/v/t1.0-9/12802872_10157129057975131_8415577704446000774_n.jpg?oh=e2a742f754cdc5866e37416341439c4e&oe=5752CA76 Gotta get my first book (bought back in 2009) signed when I see you at a convention one day! And secondly... Wes Clyde in 'Lackadaisy Scrutiny' ~ what a handsome devil he is! :D I got a better idea of his facial complexion after inspecting his head from the many angles provided - he's well built! I'm tempted to draw him...! X3 Don't mess with the Wes!

I would rather have larger but slower updates :)

A bit late, but I'm happy seeing the content either way. I think what's most important is how YOU want us to experience the story and art. If giving smaller updates more frequently ends in you feeling like you're chopping up scenes too much, for example, then give us bigger ones less frequently by all means.

Holden

Either method would be satisfactory. As far as your methods go do you block out the comic in 2-3 page increments? Plan and finish them as a piece or do you do one page at a time? I and I think that I can speak for my compatriots that we are more than satisfied with your progress. If you draw them a page at a time then you might as well post as you finish them and bask in the praise you deserve. However, if you draw them 2-3 pages at a time then we wouldn't want to risk spoiling the voodoo magic your preforming. At least that's how I assume this magic happens. I thank you for your valiant efforts.

Holden

Whether it's a long, multi-page update or a short one like this, I'm always happy to see something new. I would not mind if you made me happy more often. At the same time, I'd be happy with absorbing more of the story on a more infrequent basis. So basically what I'm saying, if I'm saying anything at all, is whatever you want to do is fine.

Ragnar Drayke

I agree with the previous poster -- I too often go back and re-read the last few pages every now and then, regardless of the size. Sometimes even from the very beginning. So really, I think it's best that you do what you feel like you're most comfortable doing. I love this comic dearly, but I'd hate for you to feel as if you're in any way pressured to release something quick.

Allie Allen

I look forward to your first full length comic book and the feature film based on your amazing artwork and excellent story telling. You have been given a fabulous gift, thank you for sharing it with us. I am honored to sponsor such genius. We need more artist in this world who will dare us to dream. Art truly is, "the soul of any nation..." I eagerly await to see what you will come up with next. Bravo, bravo!

Keith W Witherspoon,USN-Ret.

Thank you so much for answering!! I wondered why Google was telling me something about beet soup. :) You always put so much thought and care into what you write, so thanks for taking the time to answer my silly question.

Madeleine Fisher

I prefer larger updates on on a longer timescale personally, but when smaller updates like these come out I can just wait until several have been released and read them as a group (which is what I'm doing at the moment). It might be good to release more frequent but smaller chunks so that people can choose whether to wait or read them as they come.

Elliot Grey

Were getting the same thing in the long run, so in the end its whatever works the best for you!

Avalon_Sc

Actually, just for me personally, re-reading past pages in order to understand the latest episode is helpful in that I notice things in the new issue that I would have overlooked if not for the review that >reminded< me of some of the subtle details of the story. E.g. the current update has a desperate call to Victor that I would not have appreciated (the urgency of) if not for revisiting the "visit" from the two Marigold thugs! It's always a joy to reread past pages and notice 'new' (overlooked on earlier reading) details and subtleties of the art work. I think I've read the entire story thru three or four times over the life of the strip. It's kinda like having your favorite (ice cream?) desert again and again!

Larry Contrary

Poppa Bear, Momma Bear, or Baby Bear size -- they're all fine by me. I like the longer ones for the amount of information, I like the shorter ones for the frequency, and I love them all for the story, the art, the characters -- everything! Just keep doing your thing, Tracy, and we'll adapt.

Patricia J. Knoop

Smaller, bite-sized more frequent updates work well with me, personally. But it's totally up to you- any Lackadaisy updates are good! It seems like there are people in both camps here anyway...XD

Freya

I think Patrick Bonnick's comment says exactly what I'd have said if I was that articulate :-). Anyway, agreed.

Chris St

Glad to know that! Thank you for your feedback, Rue!

Tracy Butler

Thank you!!

Tracy Butler

Hehe...too long. Sometimes I wish I had more penchant for large, sweeping, high-fantasy landscapes that I could produce with marvelous, broad brush strokes. Instead, I keep veering toward little places full of tiny things with even tinier patterns on them. It's murder on the hands. Anyway, I'm sure you're no stranger to hand cramps too, and thank you! As always, your opinion means a lot. =)

Tracy Butler

I think you should go with what's easiest for you. I remember you mentioning recently that the differing page sizes are going to cause trouble with making a physical volume 2. If it makes more sense to do all 1-page updates so you don't have to rework anything, do that. If you find that making the larger pages and breaking them up later is easier, do that.

Rachel Sandler

Good to know that! Thanks, Roy.

Tracy Butler

Haha...fair enough. I know it's easy to lose track of the story with long durations between updates. Shorter and quicker might be the way to go, possibly with some larger updates mixed in where the story really calls for them.

Tracy Butler

Thanks, Don. =)

Tracy Butler

Thank you. =)

Tracy Butler

Good to know that! Thank you, Shannon.

Tracy Butler

Okay - I'll count that as a vote for more faster-shorter updates. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Tracy Butler

Thanks, Maklarr. =)

Tracy Butler

Thanks for your input, Larry. If it's not bothersome to ask, do you find it to be a problem or an annoyance to have to re-read past updates to understand a new update or to refresh your memory? I've had a number of readers say this to me, but I'm not sure whether to count is as a bad sign, as a potentially good thing, or just...a thing.

Tracy Butler

Yeah, some parts of a story work as self-contained segments and others do better broken into episodes, so I'm glad to know that a lot of readers are okay with some variation in update size. Mostly, I'm just concerned (as usual) with durations between larger updates being too long...or with smaller updates being unsatisfying. Patrons specifically are really making this comic happen these days, so I'd like to handle things in a way you all will hopefully continue to enjoy. Anyway, thank you. It is always excellent to have your feedback!

Tracy Butler

Hehe - yeah, Google Translate doesn't pick up on the contextual nuances of a language, so results can get a little wacky. I did have a native Slovak speaker do the translation to make sure it was correct as I could make it, though. It's not necessary to know exactly what Mrs. Bapka is saying, really - the intent was just to convey that she heard Viktor's name and then began prattling on about him. She informs Elsa that he's very tall and lives on the lower level of the house, that he's not feeling well, but she's taking care of him. She ends the conversation by saying that she's making soup, and will come back later (leaving Elsa hanging on the line...or, well, inside of a bag).

Tracy Butler

Thanks, Ava. I have a feeling a mix of short and long updates might work out, depending on the story content. I'm a little concerned that the shorter updates would feel disappointing substance-wise, though...and, of course, as always, I'm fretting about the duration between updates with the larger pages. Anyway, it's excellent to know that a lot of readers (or Patrons, at least) are open to either or both.

Tracy Butler

Hehe. Honestly, I wonder if I might have been unconsciously channeling Yoda when I came up with her character design. ;)

Tracy Butler

Haha! Well thank you! If nothing else, it's good to know if my current update habits are regarded as entirely off-putting or mostly tolerable. =)

Tracy Butler

Thanks, Lauren - I appreciate that!

Tracy Butler

Thanks, Nathan. A mix might not be a bad approach. Some scenes involving lengthy conversations might be better off as a single update. More fast-paced things might unfold more effectively with smaller, quicker updates.

Tracy Butler

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Elson! Hehe. I suppose it's no secret by now I love textures and elaborate patterns. I used to try penciling them in, but for the past several years, I've been using digital techniques to create them - basically painting a small segment of a pattern, then creating a larger repeating texture out of that segment (something I learned how to do in the game industry), and then manipulating the texture into place on top of the art and trying to get it to blend in seamlessly with everything else. It doesn't require quite as much impressively masochistic devotion to the pencils, but it's still a lot of work. If I never paint another staircase with a patterned runner on it again, it'll be too soon. =P Anyway, I'm glad those details don't go unnoticed! I hope you enjoy your North American adventure! March can be entirely wintry or entirely spring-like here, depending on its mood - with any luck, you'll mostly experience the latter.

Tracy Butler

Good to know - thanks, Nalani. =)

Tracy Butler

Oh, I know. I've discovered that taxes get a lot more complicated when you're self-employed. There's the self-employment tax and estimated taxes to pay to the federal and state governments every quarter. Don't even get me started on the joy of finding and funding your own health insurance. =P Anyway, thank you for your very kind words (and good luck with the tax situation)!

Tracy Butler

Noted. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on that.

Tracy Butler

Thank you for the input!

Tracy Butler

I prefer the larger but slower updates, but either is fine!

Emma

I believe shorter but more frequent updates are the way to go. In reading other web comics, I have noted that a post rate of 1/week allows the reader to more easily stay invested in the story, whereas post rates of 1/2 weeks is noticeably harder. I am referring to poor memories here, and perhaps mine is worse than others. Example comics of where I have noted this variable post rate's effect on reader engagement are Order of the Stick and Dreamkeepers. If possible, a posting rate of 1/week would be ideal, no matter how big the comic.

Pat

I'm happy either way. I love your work, and I appreciate any updates that you do. May you get a million patrons. I'm so happy that you're able to support your work via Patreon now! Don't forget to put away a HUGE chunk of that Patreon money to pay US Social Security taxes (when I worked for myself I forgot to do this properly, and I'm still paying it off).

Myrddin Emrys

I think I prefer the smaller updates.

Nalani Trynka

Tracy, the fact that you're posting quality content every month is already a huge commitment and a blessing for the dedicated readers. I share the same thoughts as those who believe in your intuition. We trust in your intuition to post short or long, frequent or infrequent, so keep at it. ;) And I second what David said about the details... Yowza! Funny thing is, I'm about to finish off a commission using textures/patterns I found an hour ago and when I saw that rug on the stairs, I was like - what the-? http://www.webdesignhot.com/wp-content/uploads/images/Floral-Vector-Pattern_89AB/Floral-Vector-Pattern.jpg XXD Anyways another awesome page, and yay for Mrs. Bapka who is speaking Slovak! X3 And yay for Elsa! X3 And yay for Vikt-*punched* *wakes up* And yay for next week! Can't wait as I'll be heading out to the United States and Canada for a holiday to catch up with friends and family! ^^

Elson Wong

There's merit in both approaches but I think it boils down to, as others have said, whatever works best for you.

Pho-Kadat

That wooden floor, that fabric, those bricks... how? What sorcery is this? (As for updates, I kind of like the cliffhanger aspect of shorter updates, but the longer complete scenes are very satisfying. So whatever feels right to you is probably best. Maybe a mix?)

Nathaniel Burney

There are pros and cons for either way of updating; personally I agree with a few people who have noted that shorter, more frequent updates would help with bad rememberers having to go back and read several pages to remember what's going on (I'm in that camp)! But I'll be reading it whatever way you post it. 😃

Lauren Sparks

I think many people are used to the 'sporadic' updates (though it isn't a bad thing with this insane level of quality!) so any content in any format and length will keep people happy. Being able to tune in more frequently with a smaller sized update is good though!! Really, as everyone else has said, your own eye for what's best for story flow is what we trust. SO this isn't really much on an answer at all..err.... *thumbs up?*

Yen Quach

Ava

If the moment in question works best as a short snappy page, or a long update, I for one will appreciate it regardless. It is entirely up to you - as readers we love your storytelling, be it in snippets or chunks! :-)

Ava

I just want to know what Mrs. Bapka is saying, that adorable little munchkin. I Google Translated, but it was... well, lacking.

Madeleine Fisher

Mae

Short or long I think what matters is what you the artist believes best communicates the story and the plot, which is fairly complicated right now. I usually have to re-read the past few pages to appreciate the current update anyway.

Larry Contrary

Whatever works for you works for me Ms. Butler! I'm still floored you churn these out as fast as you do! Also, BAPKA!

Maklarr4000

I recommend frequent shorter updates like this. The frequency means people see it your work often, and the shortness means we get to pore over details that might get lost in a longer update. But the long and short of it is, we love your stuff any way you give it to us.

AlpineBob

Ahh! This is lovely. And for me, the smaller updates are just as fulfilling as larger ones.

Leigh Legler

I actually like the larger updates! I don't usually have trouble keeping up with the story flow, so to me it's more a matter of the "is there more of it to read??" moment right when I reach the bottom of the page. But it really is up to whatever works best for you!

rue avalon

For my own part, I'm best pleased by whatever best pleases you. It's all so detailed, so alive, so *real* that I'm amazed Lackadaisy exists at all.

Doscher

I prefer the current schedule. Keep up the great work, Tracy.

Don Gator

Posting more frequently at this format will make the larger updates a lot more special (Like season finale type deals). Plus, as much as I love re-reading through your comic I don't always have the time to and keeping the updates on a shorter schedule would allow me to keep finer plot points in mind while enjoying the new content, but that's only because I have the memory of a goldfish. So, like I was saying....uh...you know.... something about cats....maybe?

McDoopin Draws

Doesn't hurt the story flow at all.

Coco

How long did you spend on those stairs? And dear god, that floor carpet. With that pattern- and it's crooked! Little touches like these make your world seem so real. Peerless work.

David Lillie

This is GREAT!!!!!
