Maria in Haría

Beim Locationscouting, bevor mich Maria im Dezember in Lanzarote besuchte, fiel mir die Stadt Haría ins Auge, da sie – anders als der Rest der Insel, der sehr karg und felsig ist – grün und reich an Vegetation wirkte. Vor unserem Shooting hatte ich dann auch noch gelesen, dass sie als "Stadt der 1000 Palmen" bekannt ist. Alles perfekt!

Am Nachmittag unseres ersten Shootingtages beschlossen Maria und ich, dorthin zu fahren, um Fotos an und unter Palmen zu machen. Dieses Unterfangen stellte sich als leichter gesagt als getan heraus. Wir spazierten fast zwei Stunden durch und rund um das Dorf – konnten jedoch keine Palmen auf betretbaren Grundstücken mit fotogenem Hintergrund finden. Die meisten Palmen waren entweder auf eingezäunten Privatgrundstücken oder befanden sich auf Abbruchgrundstücken mit viel Schutt rundherum.

Als auf unserem Rückweg am späteren Nachmittag dann das Licht immer perfekter wurde, beschlossen wir einfach, direkt an einer der Straßen zu fotografieren (auf denen uns bisher weder Autos noch Menschen entgegenkamen). Und da wir dann absolut in Fotostimmung waren, gingen wir am Ende noch einmal kurz in den kleinen Park, an dem wir das Auto abgestellt hatten. Und hier war alles perfekt: großartiges Licht kurz vor Sonnenuntergang, menschenleer, mit Bänken und vor allem: mit vielen Palmen.

During the location scouting before Maria visited me in Lanzarote in December, the town of Haría caught my eye because, unlike the rest of the island, which is very barren and rocky, it appeared green and rich in vegetation. Before our shoot, I also read that it is known as the "Town of 1000 Palms." Everything was perfect!

On the afternoon of our first shooting day, Maria and I decided to go there to take photos among and under the palms. This endeavor turned out to be easier said than done. We walked for almost two hours through and around the village but couldn't find any palms on accessible properties with a photogenic background. Most of the palms were either on fenced private properties or located on derelict plots with a lot of rubble around.

As the light became more perfect on our way back later in the afternoon, we decided to simply photograph directly on one of the roads (on which we had not yet encountered any cars or people). And since we were then absolutely in the mood for photography, we ended up taking a short walk back to the small park where we had parked the car. And here everything was perfect: great light just before sunset, deserted, with benches and, most importantly: lots of palms.
