There is a house near yours that sits on a hill overlooking everything, looking very much like something a mad scientist would love. For the longest time you were certain the house had been abandoned - that was part of how you got your own place so cheap. The owner wanted to sell badly, having gotten sick of staring at that old house on the hill. You were happy with it, and the old house didn’t bother you. You felt sort of bad for the old place, as it was just sitting up there to go to waste. It was a beautiful home, and just needed some attention.
One day, you notice a bunch of trucks and vehicles pulling up to the old house. Bit by bit the place transforms. Repairs are made, shingles replaced, the lawn is mowed and turned into a work of art. The whole place is painted and spackled into a shining crown jewel at the top of the hill, painted pink with blue shingles and fixtures. It looks almost like a dollhouse
The only thing is, you aren’t sure if someone is moving in. You haven’t seen any moving trucks or lights on in the place. You’re eager to have a neighbor nearby, friends you could visit with, have over for drinks, game nights even. There just doesn’t seem to be anybody. Until one night, when the lights are on at the house. After that you often catch the mailman delivering mail there, packages being left at the doorstep. It just doesn’t seem like anyone is there during the day. It’s only during the evening when you see life in the place.
Eventually you work up the courage, and after work one day, you go to the house with flowers and some homemade cookies to welcome the new tenants. Standing at the door, you rehearse words of welcome over and over in your head. Words to excuse yourself for not coming by sooner, words to charm and impress.
The door opens, and standing there is a tall, ethereal woman. Her white hair is cut into a bob so sleek and so blunt the ends look like a razor’s edge. She’s wearing a dark red robe that only makes her skin look all the whiter. “My, my,” she purrs in a seductively smoky voice. “What have we here?”
Your voice hides in the back of your throat. She’s so striking. The angular contours of her face and the radiant ruby color of her eyes makes her look otherworldly. Your lip trembles as you open your mouth.
“Who is at the door, starling?”
“I think it is our neighbor,” the woman says with a smirk.
You nod, barely making a grunting noise in reply.
A man appears, his long white hair pulled all to one side, giving him a disheveled bedroom look. He too is wearing a robe, only his is pastel pink. He has the same ghostly visage as the woman, haunting and beautiful.
“Hello,” you squeak.
“Why don’t you come in? It is so late, and the mosquitos are absolutely offensive.” he offers his hand to you. “Mathias.”
“Hello,” you croak.
“This is my partner, Hazelmere,” he says.
She takes the flowers from you, burying her nose amongst the petals. “Beautiful. My Mathias loves flowers.”
They lead you to a parlor where there is a fireplace lit and comfortable furniture before it, including a massive furry rug. “Come sit. We have been curious about our little neighbor.” Mathias says exuberantly. “But we have not wanted to just magically appear.”
“We did that already,” Hazelmere chuckles. “We were planning to have dinner with all the neighbors, but it seems you are the only one close by.” She places the flowers in a vase, then strides over to where you’re sitting.
“I wasn’t even sure someone was here until a few days ago,” you say, finally finding your voice. “I have been very excited to meet you.” Your breath is stolen now by nerves. They’re both so beautiful, it makes your sexuality come alive.
“Now that you’ve met us, has that changed?” Hazelmere says teasingly.
You swallow as you try to calm yourself. “I’m sorry if I interrupted anything. You’re both in robes. I hope you weren’t getting ready for… bed.”
“We dress comfortably at home. We keep robes by the front door for when company shows up,” Mathias chuckles.
Hazelmere gives him a playful shove. “If you are uncomfortable, Mathias and I can go get dressed.”
You can spy her long legs from under the robe as she sits down. One curls up, stroking against the other. Your cheeks burn and you plaster on a smile. “You’re fine, no worries.” You just wish you could keep your voice from breaking.
“Would you like something to drink?” Mathias jumps up from his seat. “Anything you want, do not hesitate to ask.”
You try to play it cool. “I’m fine, don’t worry about me.”
“Nonsense. You are our guest and neighbor, and we would like you to feel at home with us,” Hazelmere’s smile is beautiful, but there’s something strange about the corners of her mouth.
“Water?” you venture.
Mathias nods and goes behind the bar, where you hear ice tinkle against glass.
Hazelmere touches your hair. “My Mathias is a wonderful hairdresser. When was the last time you had a cut?”
“It’s been a while.” Your heart flutters as she looks at you. “I’ve been so busy with work lately.”
“Oh?” Her eyebrows raise with intrigue. “And what is it you do?”
“I’m an assistant at a law firm in town. I do all the busywork.”
Mathias returns, handing you a glass of ice-cold sparkling water with lime and lemon wedges. “Oh, thank you.”
“My pleasure,” Mathias says with a bow of his head. “Especially when I get to serve beautiful creatures such as yourself.”
Hazelmere smirks at him knowingly. “Already trying to flirt, my dear?”
He winks. “My starling knows me too well.”
“H-how long have you two been together?” you stammer.
“Too long,” Mathias chuckles as he sits again. “We are horribly inseparable.”
Hazelmere blows him a kiss. “He knows he would be dead without me, and that is why he jests. We have been together so long I can’t quite remember the exact length.”
You sip your water gingerly. “Are you married?”
“We prefer not to.” Hazelmere’s fingers slice through her perfect hair as she tucks it behind her ear. “Marriage never suited us, but we will always be together.”
“Are you coupled?” Mathias asks. “Perhaps you understand where we were coming from?”
You shake your head. “I can’t even remember the last date I had. It’s been far too long.” You look at the water as the ice shifts.
“You are young. You will have time to find the right partners.” Hazelmere replies.
You shrug. “I’m not really bothered by it. If it happens, fine.”
“Cavalier attitude. I like it,” Mathias chuckles.
You smile and try to figure out what to say next. “The place looks beautiful, by the way. I was worried I was going to see such a lovely building go to waste.”
“My Hazelmere did a wonderful job on it,” Mathias says proudly. “She bought and remodeled the place as a gift for me.”
“I am not one for pink, but he adores it, so I made him the sparkling little Barbie dream home of his fantasies. The next house we buy will be made to my specifications.” She gives Mathias a smirk, and he claps his hand over his heart.
“I’ve always enjoyed fluff and glamour,” Mathias sighs dreamily. “And yet, my heart fell for a thorn. Her taste is the exact opposite of mine, and yet, I would never dare ask her to change. Her dark reds and blacks awaken something inside me whenever she is garbed in them.”
Hazelmere winks at you. “The endless romantic that he is, it is no surprise he enjoys things to look like a Valentine’s day card.”
Mathias walks over and takes Hazelmere’s hand, kissing her long fingers lovingly. “My starling and I are whipped frosting and devil’s food cake. We make each other even more decadent than we would be apart.”
Your cheeks burn as you watch them, attracted and jealous at the same time. “You’re also going to make my teeth rot with how sweet you are. It’s kind of refreshing to see such a loving couple.”
“Love is not easy,” Hazelmere replies. “People think it is something you just fall into, when really, it is very much hard labor. It is work, it is understanding. We are together and we are individuals who respect each other and what we need individually.”
Mathias takes Hazelmere’s hand and waves it at you. “It has taken time though. We have had our spats, our spereations, but in the end, we always come together on what matters.”
“Like, perhaps, a dinner for our lovely guest?” Hazelmere coos up at him.
Mathias takes both her hands and presses them together. “My starling, you are correct. How about tomorrow night?”
“You don’t have to do that.” You try to keep playing cool, but really, you want to jump to the rafters in excitement.
Hazelmere stands. “Yes, we do. Dinner, some drinks, some more enchanting conversation, and we shall be as thick as thieves. I’ll begin planning. Mathias, show her to her car please?” She takes your hand and kisses your knuckles. “I look forward to getting to know you better, fair neighbor.”
Mathias walks you to your car, kissing your hand after opening the car door for you. “I hope we have not startled you at all, dear. Hazelmere and I can come on quite strong to some.”
You’ve been rendered breathless, already hopelessly dreamy-eyed about them. “I hope I don’t seem silly,” you chuckle. “I can be quite shy around new people.”
Mathias smirks as he captures a lock of your hair between his fingers. “All the more reason we wish to know you better. We eagerly await the time we get to see your darling face again.”
“Me too,” you stutter.
Once at home, all you can do is think about them. They are so enchanting, so beautiful. Both of them have lit up your mind with all sorts of wild thoughts. You feel guilty for thinking salaciously about them, but the idea of being captured between them is too jucy a thought to let go of. You eagerly await dinner with them the following evening. Thankfully, it’s Saturday and you have the whole day to prepare. You put your hair in curlers at the start of the morning. You paint your fingernails and toenails. You use fancy sheet masks and lotion. You even do a few squats, thinking that maybe the few you did will make you look stunning. It does nothing, but in your head it’s everything.
You arrive at their house that evening, being greeted at the door by Mathias who is dressed in a pink pinstripe blazer with matching pants and a billowy blue silk shirt underneath that was mostly unbuttoned.
“Come in! Welcome!” He takes hold of your hand, kissing your wrist. “Dinner is not quite ready, so come and relax a bit.”
He leads you back into the parlor where fresh flowers are placed on every surface. “You really didn’t need to go all out for me,” you chuckle. “A burger would have sufficed.”
Mathias stands back from you. “Judging from the effort you put into yourself this evening, I do not think a burger would suffice.” He twirls his finger in the air. “Would you mind spinning for me?”
You shyly do so, smiling eagerly as Mathias’ eyes focus on you. Perhaps those few squats did tighten your legs. Mathias grins, biting his lip as he looks back into your eyes. “Hazelmere will be most excited to see you in such good form.” He sits with you on the sofa. “Don’t tell me you dolled up just for us.”
“You’re both so beautiful,” you admit with a laugh. “Perhaps I did want a chance to impress.”
Mathias nods knowingly. “I had a feeling you were a bit charmed by us yesterday.” He sits close. “But it is early in our acquaintance. I do not want to make assumptions until I know for certain you are the lovely character you have shown us.”
Hazelmere floats into the room, or so it would appear. She’s wearing a skintight black turtleneck and high-waisted, dark red trousers. She smiles as she sees you, her stiletto heels clacking on the ground. “Welcome back, neighbor.” She kisses your cheek in greeting. “Mathias, have you not fetched her a drink yet?”
“I’ll wait until dinner,” you quickly chime in.
Your heart thumps excitedly as Hazelmere sits in Mathias’ lap. “I’ve made a lovely dinner for you tonight.” She plays with Mathias’ hair. “And, if you need to, I’ve made up a guest room for you.”
The suggestion makes your head spin. “That’s so sweet, but I live just down the road. I should be fine.”
“Only if you need it, of course,” Hazelmere chuckles.
“How is dinner coming, starling?” Mathias asks.
“Just a little bit more, not long at all.”
You gulp. “Oh! I feel awful, I never asked you two what you do for a living yesterday.”
“We’re not living,” Mathias teases.
Hazelmere gives him a warning look. “Mathias is a makeup and hair artist, when he wants to be. I flit about from thing to thing.”
“That’s how she humbly admits she’s my rich sugar mama,” Mathias chuckles.
She pinches his cheek. “Yes, my little baby.” She tucks her hair back behind her ear and smiles at you. “If you are interested, I may be in the market for a new sugar baby.”
“Maybe I’ll apply,” you say weakly.
Hazelmere chuckles as she hugs Mathias’ head. “Well, it should be time now. Why don’t the three of us make our way to the dining room?” She stands, taking your hand as she walks beside you. The dining hall is pale yellow and pink. There are images of roses everywhere, from the rug to the wallpaper. Mathias pulls out your chair and pours you a glass of sparkling champagne, plopping a strawberry inside. Hazelmere brings out dinner, which smells divine.
“I wanted to let the meat sit a bit after I took it off the grill,” she says. “I cooked the steak in a few different ways, how do you like yours prepared?”
“Rare,” you answer.
A knowing look is tossed between the couple, and Hazelmere serves you your steak. There’s roasted potatoes coated in olive oil and fresh herbs, a wine gravy, asparagus, and a lush salad. “This looks so wonderful!” you marvel. “You didn’t have to do this for me.”
Hazel’s smile is seductive. “I wanted to impress, so let me.”
“Thank you, again.” You look down at your plate excitedly. “It’s been so long since I’ve had something so nice. To think I get excited about pizza.”
Hazelmere pours herself a glass of dark red wine. “Just wait until you see the dessert Mathias has prepared. He has such a way with sweets, he’ll make your knees weak.”
“I’ll make sure to save room for some, then.”
It’s such a grand meal and yet, even as you make a dent in your food, it appears as though Mathias and Hazelmere barely touch theirs.
“What’s the matter?” Hazelmere asks. “Is everything alright?”
You force a smile. “I just noticed you two weren’t eating as much. I got a little worried I was looking like a pig.”
“Mathias and I have a condition. If we eat too fast it can cause an illness. We enjoy sharing meals because then we can see others enjoying it.” Hazelmere raises her glass to you. “You are a treat for us.”
“We used to throw dinner parties quite often. Lots of guests, lots of fun.” Mathias sighs dreamily.
“But it got to be a bit too much,” Hazelmere grimaces. “Some people got too demanding. Some refused to leave.”
“It is a big factor in why we decided to move.” Mathias sighs. “It became exhausting to deal with so many...” He screws his mouth into a thin line. “Lovers.”
You stop yourself from taking a drink. “Is that so?”
“No reason to hide it I suppose. If you take offense, you take offense. Hazelmere and I enjoy sex. We often have lovers, sometimes even share them. In our old home we used to throw parties for...”
Hazelmere raises her hand to stop him. “Before he releases too many gory details, I can see you’re holding back your reaction out of politeness. If this is not your sort of thing, then by all means, tell us we are crazy and leave.”
You set your glass down and shake your head. “It’s not that - well, it’s part of it. But what you two do with your personal lives is your business. You don’t have to share with me if you don’t want to. I know I look like bland vanilla.”
“We don’t want to overshare and scare away a prospective friend,” Mathias says. “Saying we used to have a sex dungeon can kill a mood.”
“‘Dungeon’ is a creepy word,” you chuckle to lighten the mood. “If anything, I’m just bound to ask lots of questions. That could get annoying.”
“Most people treat sex like a secret,” Hazelmere replies. “People find it off-putting that we can be so open about it.”
The fact they haven’t touched their food leaves your mind completely. Now, the salacious thought of being pressed between them returns. “Are you trying to seduce me?” You ask this in jest, but part of you hopes it’s true.
The couple shoot smiles at one another. “If you’d like,” Mathias purrs.
