October brings two lines with distinct identities. In The Bannerman, we return to the forest with a dissident branch of the high lineage: the Sylvan Elves, split before the elven colonization of the surface, guardians of the Spine and its pacts with ancient spirits. In The Adventurer, we travel to the dusk of the Empire: the Comitatenses, the field army that allowed Rome to keep responding on several frontiers at once. Two visions of war—numinous and historical—presented with coherent lore and material fidelity.

Octubre reúne dos líneas con identidad propia. En The Bannerman volvemos al bosque con una rama disidente del linaje alto: los elfos silvanos, escindidos antes de la colonización élfica de la superficie, guardianes de La Espina y de sus pactos con espíritus antiguos. En The Adventurer viajamos al ocaso del Imperio: los comitatenses, el ejército de campaña que permitió a Roma seguir respondiendo en varias fronteras a la vez. Dos visiones del combate —lo numinoso y lo histórico— presentadas con coherencia de trasfondo y fidelidad material.

THE BANNERMAN · THE FOREST PACT

The Sylvan schism precedes the so-called “War of the Roots.” They rejected marble and chose open sky, glades and high passes. Their law is balance with wild life and the stewardship of the Spine, a sacred range from which they control passes and valleys. This month portrays those who uphold that pact.

La escisión silvana antecede a la llamada “Guerra de las Raíces”. Rechazaron el mármol y eligieron cielo abierto, claros y collados. The standard is a living totem: a consecrated shaft crowned with antlers, engraved with pact-marks. When raised, it awakens route-memories, gathers lesser spirits and declares the

Beast Master
Mediator between clans and totemic fauna. His messenger birds, horned coursers and moss-wolves are not servants but allies summoned by ancient signals. His presence opens safe routes and precipitates precise ambushes; wherever he extends his arm, the forest answers.

Bladedancer’s Hero
She guards the ritual dance that predates colonization. The choreography is no ornament: it encodes turns, feints and tempo shifts passed from mistress to disciple. The figure embodies that tradition with ceremonial bearing, light steel and controlled movement.

Bladedancers
Warriors of extreme mobility. They fight as a liturgical procession: they burst in, unmake formations and dissolve among trunks. Their garments blend scale and fabric to keep the forest silhouette; their curved blades mirror the gesture of a branch cutting the light.

Gloom Grove Sentinels
Spirits bound to trunk and sap. Not elves transformed, but presences of place that assume humanoid shape when needed. They keep uncharted paths, summon roots and seal passes with the patience that only winter grants.

Espíritus vinculados a tronco y savia. No son elfos transformados, sino presencias del lugar que asumen forma humanoide cuando es preciso. Custodian sendas no cartografiadas, invocan raíces y cierran pasos con una paciencia que solo concede el invierno.

Ladies of the Spine
High-pass cavalry and sorceresses of the old path. They ride ritual cervids, bear spell-standards and living staves. They weave winds, divert gazes and channel the will of the forest along the ridge they swore to defend.

Caballería de los pasos altos y hechiceras de la vieja senda. Montan cérvidos rituales, portan estandartes-conjuro y báculos vivos. Tejen vientos, desvían miradas y encauzan la voluntad del bosque sobre los collados que juraron defender.

THE ADVENTURER · ROME ON CAMPAIGN

Between the 3rd and 4th centuries, the reforms of Diocletian and Constantine reorganize imperial forces. The Comitatenses emerge as mobile reserves able to move quickly and act where the Empire requires: Rhine, Danube or internal crises. Their image combines crested or segmented helmets, mail and scale armour, oval or round shields with umbo, spatha at the hip, spear, and plumbatae darts as a hallmark of late infantry.

Entre los siglos III y IV, las reformas de Diocleciano y Constantino reordenan las fuerzas imperiales. Surgen los comitatenses, reservas móviles capaces de desplazarse rápidamente y actuar donde el Imperio lo exige: Rin, Danubio o crisis internas. Su imagen combina cascos segmentados o de cresta, cota de malla y escamas, escudo oval o circular con umbo, spatha al costado, lanza, y dardos plumbatae como elemento característico de la infantería tardía.

Comitatenses General
A comes or magister militum at the head of the field force. He coordinates vexillationes from several legions and federate contingents, deciding routes, supply and the point of decision. The figure’s bearing reflects operational command and campaign experience more than urban ceremony.

Un comes o magister militum al frente de la fuerza de campaña. Coordina vexillationes de varias legiones y contingentes federados, decide rutas, abastecimiento y punto de choque. El porte de la figura refleja mando operativo y experiencia de campaña más que ceremonia urbana.

Comitatenses Command Group (vexillarius, officer, cornicen)
The vexillarius bears the vexillum that identifies the unit and serves as a rally point. The officer (veteran centenarius or tribunus) maintains discipline and manoeuvre. The cornicen sounds buccina/cornu to transmit orders in battle and on the march. With them, the cohort keeps cohesion through dust, snow or rain.

El vexilario porta el vexillum que identifica a la unidad y sirve de punto de reunión. El oficial (centenarius veterano o tribunus) mantiene disciplina y maniobra. El cornicen toca buccina/cornu para transmitir órdenes en combate y marcha. Con ellos, la cohorte conserva cohesión en polvo, nieve o lluvia.

Comitatenses in Combat
Tight shields, spears projected forward and spatha ready for the final push. Before contact they release plumbatae; after the clash, they rotate by centuries while keeping pressure. It is late-imperial warfare in practice: adaptable, restrained and effective.

Comitatenses Resting
Campaigns are sustained by maintenance and logistics: straightening umbos, checking rings, adjusting straps, standing watch and sharing rations. Without this “invisible” time, no army marches.

La campaña se sostiene con mantenimiento e intendencia: enderezar umbos, repasar anillas, ajustar correas, vigilar turnos y compartir ración. La escena subraya que sin este tiempo “invisible” no hay ejército que marche.

Donkey Mill (mola asinaria)
The mola asinaria turns grain into flour for convoys and mobile horrea. It secures rations for men and feed for draft animals. A reminder that Rome defends itself with standards—and with logistics.

La mola asinaria convierte grano en harina en los convoyes y horrea móviles. Asegura raciones para hombres y pienso para animales de tiro. Es un recordatorio de que Roma se defiende tanto con estandartes como con logística.
