The Adventurer - Viking Bondis and Hirdmen

🛡️ May – Viking Bondis and Hirdmen

The Adventurer – Last Sword Miniatures

This month we introduce one of the most representative units of the Scandinavian medieval world: the bondis and hirdmen — the infantry backbone of the military and social structure of the Norse kingdoms between the 9th and 11th centuries.

These are not legendary figures or heroic characters, but armed men who fulfilled their role within a system of loyalty, duty, and retribution. A structured and disciplined force, essential to the Viking expansion both in Scandinavia and abroad.

“Better to fight and fall than to live without hope.”
Icelandic sagas, attributed to the warriors of Jomsborg

The bondis were free men with the right and obligation to bear arms when summoned. Many were farmers or merchants who, at the sound of the war horn, answered with shield and spear. Their role was twofold: to defend their community and to meet the responsibilities of their status.

The hirdmen, on the other hand, were part of a lord’s or king’s personal retinue. Bound by personal loyalty, they fought as bodyguards, frontline troops, or command units. Their equipment was more advanced, and their training more consistent.

This unit captures both types. The miniatures incorporate elements documented in archaeological finds and period iconography: round shields, mail shirts, laminated helmets, cloaks fastened with brooches, and close-combat weapons suited for tight formations.

They were not the first to charge nor the last to retreat — but when it was time to hold the line, it was their shields that stood firm.

Mayo – Bondis y Hirdmen Vikingos

The Adventurer – Last Sword Miniatures
