October 1986
My breath comes out in thick, white puffs as I look up at the stars. The blanket around me is warm and soft, and there is a faint scent coming from the burning candles. Amon is stoking a fire in the little cast-iron fire pit. his long white hair pulled back into a loose ponytail. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen him without it falling around his face. In the candlelight, I see shiny patches on his pale skin. Scars, going down from his temple onto his neck and shoulders. He dusts his hands off and catches me staring, and I quickly avert my eyes again.
“It’s a beautiful night,” I murmur.
“If it is too cold for you, we can go back inside.” Amon sits down beside me. “I thought that here we could get some privacy to talk.”
I put on a smile for him. “I’m used to camping with my folks. I don’t mind it. Once the fire gets going, it won’t matter.”
Amon’s eyes flick up to the sky, and I see the many puncture-mark scars on his neck. I move closer to him and he flinches, settling back down with a sigh. “So what did you want to talk about?” I ask.
Amon scratches the space between his eyebrows. “I’ve seen how close you are with Raul and Pidge. It’s been rather nice to see that warmth.” He turns in his seat to face me. “The people here mean a lot to me. I’ve housed many vampires over the years, protected them...” His brow knits together and he looks down at his big hands. “Seeing a human like you is a joy.”
I think I understand what he’s getting at. “I have to confess, when I met Raul and Pidge, I was kind of… Well, I just wanted to be edgy. I wanted to be the weird girl who hung out with vampires. But I realized that was stupid. It was gross of me to want to be friends with them only because of that.”
“We’re all people,” Amon murmurs.
I nod in agreement. “Raul and Pidge made me realize how stupid I was to think that way. Since then, I’ve tried to see everyone as just souls.”
The faintest hint of a smile appears on his lips. “You believe we have souls?”
“Raul is so passionate, and Pidge is so full of fire. How could they not have souls?” I slip my hand from the blanket, placing it into Amon’s. His hand dwarfs mine, making it look like a child’s. “You seem far too sweet to be soulless.”
Amon gulps and ducks his head, but when his hair doesn’t fall into his face, he rubs his cheek. “Thank you. Most people believe that vampires don’t have souls.”
“That’s ignorance talking.” I trace the lines in Amon’s hand, noticing more puncture scars on his wrist. “Things are changing. Hopefully with Dr. Polidori’s clinic, things will change for the better quicker.”
Amon’s eyes go soft. “How is that going, by the way? I know I heard you say you suffer horrible pain some days.”
I place my palm over my pelvis. “I’m surprised by how well Dr. Polidori’s methods work. Usually by now in my cycle, I’m curled up in a fetal position in my bed with no hope. Right now, it’s only the most mild cramping. Well...” I click my tongue. “Mild compared to what I’m used to.”
His expression looks downright guilty. “You’re in pain?”
“It’s fine! Really,” I chuckle. “I’m used to so much worse that this is bearable.” I squeeze my hand around his fingers. “Don’t look so sad. I’m enjoying your company.”
“You should have said something,” Amon murmurs.
“I’m so used to not saying anything about it. Raul and Dr. Polidori have really helped me feel sane about my symptoms.” I stroke my hand down his palm again. “What about you?”
“Me?” Amon turns his face away. “What do you mean?”
“Pidge says you mainly rely on red rations. I know those can’t taste good.”
“It’s better than having to hunt or hurt someone,” Amon murmurs. He closes his hand over mine. “I feel bad even asking you what I did.”
I sit up, letting the blanket fall off my shoulders. I then scoop my hair away from my neck. “Raul told me once that red rations only help in keeping a vampire alive, but it does not have everything they need.”
“Lucy.” His breath catches as his eyes fall on my throat. He touches my skin, smooth fingers running down. “It’s been a long time.”
“It’s okay. I’ve been taking B-9 supplements since I started going to the clinic. I’ve also been drinking a lot of orange juice.” I tilt my head to the side so my neck stretches. “You won’t hurt me.”
Amon’s breath comes out stilted. He leans in close to me, cupping my cheek as his lips press to my neck. He peppers soft kisses there before pressing his long tongue against my skin. I shiver and hold his free hand. “Amon,” I moan.
“I won’t hurt you.” He echoes my words. I feel the pinch of his teeth as they pierce my skin. At first, it hurts until that hot rush comes to the surface. His hand moves into my hair, tangling in it. He grunts against my skin, pressing his body closer and closer to mine. I press my hands into his chest, gripping his shirt as I let out a moan. He instantly pulls back, licking blood from his lips. He cups his hand around his mouth, closing his eyes as he gulps down air.
I feel a little dizzy, but it’s a sensation I have grown used to, and even enjoy. I smile up at Amon and giggle softly.
“What's so funny?” he asks quietly.
I shake my head. “Nothing. I just like how that feels.”
Amon lowers his hand from his mouth. “Perhaps you are a bit strange.”
I lick my lips, used to being kissed at this point during a feast. “I’m just happy to help, that’s all.”
The dark veins that push against his pale skin appear less visible, and the shade of his eyes begins to lighten. He dips back down, licking the puncture wounds on my neck to seal and heal them. “Amon,” I moan again.
He lifts his head to look at me, capturing my face between his palms. “That voice frightens me,” he whispers.
My face is burning, and I know he can feel it. “How come?”
“Because it has power over me.” He releases my face and turns back to look at the fire.
I pull the blanket back up around me and lean against his side. His skin feels slightly warmer as I rest my cheek against his arm. “How do you feel?”
“Much better, thank you.” He puts an arm around me. “I don’t feel so heavy. What about you, Lucy? Should I take you back down to rest?”
“I’m fine for now. Let’s stay here. I’m enjoying getting to know you better.”
“Yes,” he breathes, “I’m enjoying getting to know you as well.” His palm rubs up and down my back.
Just before dawn, he takes me back to his room. It’s filled with bookshelves and stacks of books. I half expect to pull back the covers on his bed to see that it too is made of books.
“You should get some sleep,” Amon says, offering me a shirt to sleep in. “My bed is all yours for as long as you need it.”
“Will you join me?” I ask hopefully. “Just snuggle with me and talk to me till I fall asleep. I’ve grown used to that with Raul and Pidge.”
Amon chuckles shyly. “Are you sure?”
“Very sure.”
I change while Amon gets into bed. He takes up a good chunk of it, but when I cuddle into his side, I feel so comfortable. I see more scars on his chest, and I badly want to ask him about them, but I feel it’s too soon. I rest my cheek on his arm. “You’re not used to this sort of company, are you?”
“Not for a long time,” he sighs. “I forgot how warm humans can be. How soft. I want to be your friend, Lucy, but I must confess my thoughts are far from friendly.”
I sit up to look down at him. “Should I be worried?”
He shakes his head. “I won’t touch you unless you invite it.”
He looks so beautiful, laid on the bed. His long white hair spills over the pillows, his strong body laid vulnerable. I lean down, stealing a kiss. His fingers rest on the back of my head, and I let the kiss deepen. I move my body on top of his, feeling like a kitten. I move down to his neck, his chest, where I lick and nip each nipple. Amon’s breath shudders and he cups his hands over his face. “Lucy,” he moans. “What are you doing to me?”
“Is this less than friendly?” I straddle his stomach, knowing he can feel the wetness seeping through my panties. “I’ll stop if it’s uninvited.”
His eyes peer through his fingers and he moves his hands away. He grabs my hips, kneading his strong fingers into me. “It’s welcome.” His voice catches in his throat. “But you don’t have to continue.”
I lower back down, kissing his belly as I move down his pajama pants. I tug them, seeing more scars along his hips. I kiss gently there, stroking my fingers over the scars. I lick the jut of his hip bone, and he shivers. I’m hit in the face by his cock, which thwacks against my nose and actually hurts a little. It has to be the biggest cock I’ve come across.
Amon braces himself on his elbows. “Are you okay?”
“Gag me,” I whisper in awe. I stroke his shaft slowly, admiring the veins and thickness. I sit up to take it in better, pumping slowly and feeling it throb in my palms.
“Sorry,” Amon moans. “I know it’s weird.”
I shoot him a sharp look. “Not weird.” I bite my lip. “Just… above average.”
His chest shudders and he swallows. “You don’t have to keep going. You can stop whenever you want.”
“I’m not stopping now.” I lower myself back down, getting a taste of the behemoth. I sink my lips over the bulbous tip, suckling and then letting him pop out. His voice rises an octave, and his fists sink into the sheets. I do it again, stretching my jaw a bit to take more of him in. He says something in a language I don’t know, growling deeply and raising his hips. I knead my hands into his thighs, moving lower to massage his balls. I can’t take much of him into my mouth without being able to unhinge my jaw, but it’s enough to give me pleasure at least.
I hear the sheets rip, and I look up to see his neck is strained. His mouth has opened back to his ears, and flaps of taut red skin protrude from the edges of his lips. Seeing him like this makes me even more aroused. I want to make him feel better than myself right now. I suck more, bobbing my head while continuing to handle his sack.
He groans and mutters in that language again, thrashing his head this way and that. His back arches, his body pulses, and his come hits the back of my throat. I choke at first, and his load impresses me. I pull back, swallowing what I can while the rest pulses onto my face and shirt. Amon gasps and writhes on the bed, clutching the torn sheet in his fists.
After swallowing, my cramps are almost completely gone. Licking him clean, I hear soft sobs from above. “Are you okay?” I rush to his side.
Amon looks up at me with the sweetest, warmest expression. His tears are red as they trickle down the corners of his eyes. “I’m fine,” he moans. “Just overwhelmed. Come here.” He lays me on the bed and kisses me. As he does, his fingers trail down my body. He goes into my panties, rubbing my mound before finding my clit. I moan against his lips, and his tongue presses inside. His large fingers circle around my clit, swirling, finding what pleases me most. He sinks one finger inside, finding me wet and hot. He moans as his finger sinks in deep, stirring me up until I spill onto the sheets. His fingers toy with me, winding me up into a froth then soothing me. He’s gentle, making me beg for more, and when he gives it to me, I can barely breathe. He watches me, those soft eyes focused on me so he can understand what his touch does. I feel like I may come undone or explode, either way, I won’t last long.
He feels me pulsing and moves his fingers harder. His thumb rubs my clit, while his fingers inside hit the button that causes my vision to go white. I buck and writhe, thrusting myself against his hand. He doesn’t stop. He won’t let me breathe. I gasp and beat against his shoulder, finally collapsing onto his bed.
He sucks his fingers clean before kissing my neck and chest. He licks the sweat from my skin and whispers into my ear.
“How do you feel?” he asks.
“Too good.” I whimper.
His smile is so cute, but I can barely enjoy it. I’m drunk on the orgasm, giddy and stupid and immobile.
I wake up to find Amon resting beside me. I still feel giddy and stupid, but at least I can feel my toes again. I kiss his neck and he stirs. “I’m glad to see you’re awake.” He rises. “I was afraid you’d fallen into quite the stupor.”
I grin like an idiot. “I almost did.” I yawn and stretch. “What time is it?”
Amon checks his clock. “It’s almost five.”
“In the morning?” I didn’t sleep much at all, but it feels like I haven’t moved in days.
“In the evening.”
I sit up in a rush. “I’m going to be late!” I grab my clothes and quickly change. “I didn’t mean to sleep so long! Crap! I’ll have to go to work without a shower.”
“I’m sorry! I would have woken you.” Amon rises naked out of the bed, and I nearly consider quitting work.
I shake my head to snap my mind right. “No, no, it’s okay!” I head out the door and go through the kitchen. “I’ll be fine. I’m just starting out on the wrong foot.”
Gabriel is sitting in the kitchen as I walk by. “Whose foot do you have?”
I give him a look and gather my shoes from beside the door. “Is Pidge or Raul here?” I ask him.
Gabriel nods. “They are, but it’s still too bright out. Give them an hour.”
“No. I don’t have time. I’ll just walk.” I smile at Amon as he steps out of his room, dressed. “I’ll come back later. I had fun last night.”
“I heard,” Gabriel winks. “I’ve never heard Amon like that before.”
My cheeks burn. “Were you listening?”
“Didn’t have to. Amon was loud enough to shake pictures off the wall. Pidge and I cleaned up quite a bit of glass last night.”
I grimace at Gabriel after finally getting my shoes on.
“I’m not joking,” Gabriel says with a shake of his head.
“I don’t have time to argue this. I’ll see you all later!” I rush out the door, and make it to work in time to get scolded and given garbage duty. I go out back to the dumpsters to find Henri and another bartender taking their smoke break.
“What made you so late?” Henri smirks, almost like he knows.
“Slept in,” I grunt as I heft the trash bag into the dumpster. “Had a pretty good evening last night, if I do say so.”
“With those fangers?” the bartender asks.
I frown at them. “You shouldn’t say that.”
She blows cigarette smoke at me. “Who says?” She tosses her cigarette down and stomps on it. “They’re dangerous, and I hope you learn that before you find out firsthand.” She goes back inside and Henri looks at me apologetically.
“What did you say to her?”
“Nothing!” he protests. “I just told her you had some friends who happened to be vampires.”
He won’t look directly at me. “Jerk.” I storm back inside as well.
That evening, as I’m cleaning up before closing, I take another bag of trash out. To my surprise, I see Amon at the door. “What’re you doing here?”
He stands alert and holds his arms down stiff by his sides. “Gabriel said I should pick you up from work.”
“Gabriel?” I ask.
“Surprise!” Gabriel suddenly jumps out from the dumpster. I scream and slam the garbage in his face. He topples and hits the open lid, making it shut on top of him.
“I told him not to do that, but he has… impulse issues.”
“Gabriel, I’m sorry!” I yell at the still and quiet dumpster.
There’s a knock on the lid. “I’m fine.”
Amon helps Gabriel out and sets him down on the ground. “I told you not to.”
“Hey, I still got what I wanted. I’m having the time of my life.” He grimaces as he wipes something wet off his shirt. “Just need a shower, that’s all.”
“I’m still not quite done with work, and I was going to go to my apartment after,” I say apologetically. “You didn’t need to do this.”
“Yes, we did,” Gabriel sniffs. “Is there a reason we can’t see your apartment?”
“My roommate sucks, and the sink is full of dishes,” I murmur. “But if you want to take me home, I don’t have much to complain about.”
“It’ll be fine as long as we get home before daylight,” Amon says gently.
Amon’s car is surprisingly nice, and even with the slight smell of garbage on Gabriel, there’s a scent of fancy cologne all around me. Once at my place, I take them back to the living room and ask them to be quiet while I change. When I come out though, I find Gabriel in my shower.
“What are you doing?” I hiss quietly.
“Taking a shower!” Gabriel scoffs. “I’m also shaving my legs.”
I scoff and roll my eyes. “You’re buying me a new razor!”
I invite Amon back to my room. He looks around, seeming quite curious. “It smells like you.” His voice is soft and breathless. “I like it.”
My cheeks burn. “I haven’t actually been here more than a couple hours recently. You boys have been having me over so much, I’ve not really cleaned or anything.”
“Can I borrow some clothes?” Gabriel walks in stark naked with a towel on his head. He’s clean-shaven from ankle to chest.
“What the fuck did you leave in my shower?” I ask him.
Gabriel starts going through my drawers. “These panties are cute! May I?”
I’m about to argue, but I realize he’ll probably look better in them than I ever did. “Can you be stopped?”
He winks at me. “Only in certain situations.” He slides on the panties, and yes, he looks amazing in them. “I’ll buy you something pretty one day to thank you for your hospitality.”
“This view isn’t too bad.” I sit down beside Amon on the bed.
“I’m so used to seeing him strut around like this,” Amon sighs. “We’ve known each other for far too long.”
Gabriel poses seductively in front of my closet. “After last night, I thought I knew every facet of you, Amon. But apparently, there’s something I don’t know.” He starts going through my closet, sifting through the clothes. “So much black.”
“You know, you’re the only one I haven’t gotten to hang out with solo, Gabriel,” I say. “You’re always bounding around on flights of fancy.”
“We can have sex. Just say so.” Gabriel puts on a black, low cut t-shirt.
“That’s not what I meant,” I scoff.
Gabriel bounds over to me. “Let me dye your hair.”
I furrow my brow at him. “What brought this on?”
“I have all sorts of dye at home. Let me dye your hair and give you a bath.” He’s far too beautiful. I can see where he could easily get his way just by his looks.
I swallow. “What color?”
