I smirk back at him. “Can’t wait.”
I leave once everyone has come to the book club. Locking the door behind me I go out to my car. While there, I happen to glance over towards the church’s parking lot. I can see it over the fence that surrounds the bookstore as it’s down the hill from us. There I see, wandering around the parking lot, is what looks like to be a goose. Rather odd, I thought, but there is a pond just beyond the church’s backyard, so the goose must have come from over there. I go home thinking none of it again.
The next day I go into work, I find a tote bag sitting at my desk. There’s a note attached to it from the owner.
“Reverend Beleth left this last night. If you could return it to him that would be wonderful. Thank you so much.”
I scoff, shoulders slouching as I start to feel fatigued. I take it over anyways. As I get out of my car I feel the sudden sensation of hot burning eyes boring into me. I turn slowly, glancing to my left I see the predator that the raptor evolved into it.
The goose sits there, eyes as black and soulless as the abyss, bore into me. I stand there frozen solid, unsure if moving or not is a good thing. The horrible goose is frighteningly still as if planning how to devour my corpse when he’s done pecking me to death.
I move to the side, Beleth’s bag still in my hand. The goose also moves forward. He takes two steps, flapping out his wings as he does.
I scream and run, not turning around long enough to see if the downy abomination is chasing after me. As I rush up the stairs the doors open and I fling myself inside. Just as the doors close I hear the goose shriek and attack the wood without mercy.
“That fucking monster needs to be shot!” Beleth huffs.
I thrust his tote bag to him. “No way I could use you as a shield so I can get back to my car?” I grump.
Beleth takes his bag. “He’ll be stalking at the door for at least half an hour. I suggest waiting him out until he gets bored.”
“How long has he been stalking the place?” I huff. I feel so tired after the whole ordeal, I could honestly lay down and nap in a pew.
“A few days ago,” he grouses.
Suddenly, it clicks and I cup my hand over my mouth. “The goose attacked you!” I point at him. “That’s how you-”
“Shut up!” Beleth snarls.
It hurts to not laugh but I am trying my hardest not to bust. “You-oh my god! That’s how you got th black eye! The goose got you!”
“ I tripped I-” he grimaces and walks away.
I follow after him, going to his office where he almost slammed the door in my face. “No wonder you didn’t want to share.”
“It all happened so fast. He got me, I ran, it was really nothing.” He slams his hands down on the desk. “You know what? Leave. Get out. I hope he eats you.”
“Oh come on,” I smirk. “You have to admit it’s really kind of funny. You, a demon from hell, him, the king of hell.” I sputter and snort. “Is he your boss?”
Beleth grabs me by the shoulders and turns me towards the door. “That’s enough. Get out of here.”
I try to keep from moving as he pushes me. “Please no! I really don’t want to run like that again.”
“Well too bad. I would say I’m feeding you to the wolves, but it’s much worse than that.” He stops trying to push me and I turn around. “If you tell anyone-”
“Why would I?” I laugh. “Everyone around here loves you so much they’d bowl me over for making fun of you. I know when to keep my mouth shut and when to blabber.”
Beleth’s shoulders slouch. “I suppose that’s true.” He tilts his head. “You’ve not even breathed a word to me about my actual lineage.”
“I call you an ass demon,” I smirk.
Beleth rolls his eyes. “Tell me, is there a reason you’re holding this information over my head? Do you want something from me?”
“I’m not holding anything.” I shake my head at him with a brow arched. “Yeah, it’s weird, and I don’t much care for you, but what would be the point to tell someone? To be called insane? To have them like you more because I’m trying to attack you? I laugh. “No way. Keeping my tongue is better than dealing with bullshit regularly.”
Beleth smiles. “You sure I haven’t charmed you, even a little?”
I just stand there and glare at him. “Why are you trying so hard? Did you mommy not love you enough or something?”
Beleth grimaces but he remains oddly quiet. “Don’t say that again,” he snarls.
