His black tongue licks along his teeth and a shuddering growl vibrates in his throat. There is an anxious flutter in my belly as his gaze deepens and I move to cover myself. I stop and go over to the cauldron. I take one of the bowls from the side and fill it with the stew.
“You have scars,” Gryndren murmurs.
I take a pillow from the bedchamber and set it on a stone as I eat. “Yes,” I nod. “What about them?”
“Some look painful,” Gryndren eases down onto the beach.
“They were all painful,” I scoff. I lick broth from my fingertips. I look him over before turning my attention back onto the food. “What about you? Any painful scars of your own?”
“I king once came here, jealous I was getting the attention he thought he deserved. He stabbed me in the stomach quite a few times before the people of the village started throwing rocks at him.”
“A king?” I ask as I take a bite from the spoon. “What king would that be?”
“I’m assuming a distant ancestor of the czar who sits on the throne now. Big white bear guy,” he scoffs. “He’s the reason I went into the sleep I did.”
“What’d he do?” I ask.
Gryndren scowls. “Aren’t you listening?” He rolls his eyes. “He stabbed me, and I needed to heal. He laced the blade with some sort of poison.” He nestles into the sand with a strange look on his face. “It took me a long time...longer than I care to admit.”
“So that’s why you hate the Polar,” I murmur.
