Chapter Four Pencils, All Done!

Look at that glorious stack of drawings!

Fifty-six pages of drama and excitement, ready to ink. Buckle up! It's time to make some PERMANENT MARKS.

[ As always, the images in the carousel and below may be spoilery to certain degrees. And if you're wondering, "why are the images so bad?" it's because my pencil drawings are very light and difficult to photograph. ]

^ This one turned out kind of Ghibli-esque, thinking of those scenes where someone's hair rises solely because of strong emotion.

^ More birds, part of my attempts to include "breathing room" panels. Maybe it's thematically appropriate, maybe it's symbolic, maybe it carries a story thread forward, maybe it imbues the fictional world with vitality, maybe it's a quiet place to rest. It's important that it means something to me, but not necessary that it means the same thing to you, Dear reader.

There are more images in the carousel above if you're curious, but I have intentionally excluded the most meaningful pages that conclude the chapter. They're just very spoilery, and I want you to see them when they're looking their very best.

As promised last week, I'm taking a day or so to do a little story work on How to Get There. Nothing interesting to see here, yet — I'm just trying to get it to a place where it feels like there's some "there" there, if that makes sense. As smarter people than me have said before, it's real hard work making something meaningful and concise. I'm sure there will be many revisions in my future.

After that, it's time to dust off the inking equipment. Always a daunting prospect. I really like the life in the pencil drawings. Will I be able to maintain that vitality in the inks? Have I planned appropriately for all the dramatic lighting this chapter requires? We will all FIND OUT TOGETHER!

Finally, this week I had a studio mate. Here we are reviewing some of our compositional choices.

Two goofs with unkempt hair getting it done with coloured pencils. I don't really put kiddo photos online, but (just between you and me) I love it when he joins me at the drawing desk, and I thought it might make you smile, too.

Until next week,
I remain,
a quiet place to rest,

TC
