Using 3d models as pixel art reference

One cool trick for making complex animations in pixel art, specially when it involves rotating or complex perspective is to use blender or other simple 3d tool to mock it up first.

Let's start with a use case, I wanted to create a simple café sign that rotates, this was my initial sketch:

Simple Water Reflection and Masking

Super happy with how it turned out!

Heavily based on https://www.shadertoy.com/view/MdlXz8

It uses a mask texture generates a noise for distortion, not the fastest, but I like the effect so far!
You can see the actual shader code here: https://gist.github.com/saint11/8174e076c83e1f4b460b0b70d7644e9e...

My game is slowly becoming more and more a cursed farming sim/town builder and honestly we're okay with that.

Do you like the art style direction so far?

Chest animation

Little chest animation I won't use anymore. It's a simple animation but uses a lot of classic animation principles like easing, anticipation and "squash and stretch".

You can also use that in a game or however you want, it's released under public domain.

This work is free of known copyright restrictions.

Pixel art alignment

Quick tip on a pixel art technique that I really like.

This is usually one of the first things that I notice when looking at beginners pixel art, since it's not very intuitive.

Having everything aligned can be bad because it creates a secondary resolution on top of your main one. For example, 2x2 or 2x1 pixel chunks merge into bigger "pixels". Breaking that alignment makes the most out of the resolution you currently have.

Dead Weight 0.6 is done!

All right, finally my tabletop RPG is "done"! There's still a lot of room for growth, but I'll let it sit for a while for no. You can get the whole rulebook for free here: https://saint11.org/dead_weight/

It also includes a online dice roller/chat room: https://deaddice.page/

Let me know if you have any feedback on it :)

I made an online dice roller!

Long story short, I couldn't make Roll20 do the things I wanted so I made my own dice roller for my RPG system! (I'm still using Rol20 for the map stuff)

Basically is just an online dice roller and chat room where you can re-roll specific dice.

Feel free to use it and please let me know if anything breaks or can be improved :)

I'm going to add the other dice types next.

I'm honestly a bit worried about server ...

Dead Weight, a full RPG System

Hi there!

I've been working for a couple weeks on a new tabletop RPG project. The idea is to make a OSR inspired system, but with a modern ruleset. It includes both a rule system and a world.

It will be free and released under Creative Commons and supported by Patreon, like most things I do. All the assets will also be free to use in whatever people want.

Pixel Art Articles & Glossary

After working on my current project, Scars for a bit too long I think I need a couple weeks break, so I decided to continue my series of articles "Pixel Art for Beginners". First I decided to port them from Medium to my website. That's way more work than I was anticipating, but it will pay off in the long run. I'm currently porting the 4th article (there are 7 right now).

My next step is to start a 2021-02-22 19:44:36 +0000 UTC View Post

Concept art and style exploration

I've been using Procreate to explore some ideas and try new styles. These can also be considered concept art for my side project (the medic game), they are all about trying to visualize how the game world would work.

Weaver in The Vault

Here's my second illustration inspired by Clark Ashton Smith's work. This one is from the short story "The Weaver in the Vault", hope you like it!

By the way, this illustration is under creative commons, so feel free to use it anywhere you want, as long as credit is given. There's a version without the background attached in this post.

Isle of the Torturers

Illustration I made inspired by "Isle of the Torturers" by Clark Ashton Smith. It's a very dark and eerie story that I read recently and sparked my interested in the author.

I'm working on another illustration on this same style now, based on the story called "The Weaver in the Vault". Here's a sneak peek of that one:

Under Anisa's Tower

Just a quick 1-page adventure that I did on my iPad for fun. If you try it, let me know!

There's a PDF attached with all rooms and monster descriptions using The Black Hack system, but it's probably very easy to convert it to D&D or anything else. I didn't playtested it, though, so it's probably very unbalanced.

Resources pack #1

I really like drawing resources. I don't know why, but I think imagining random things that games can use is extremely fun, so I decided to use my free time on the iPad to draw some random resources on Procreate!

The icons here are all under the CC0 licence, which means you can do whatever you want with it, you can use it commercially, remix, share, use exactly as it is, doesn't matter :)

Status Update

For those who didn't know, I've just moved to Vancouver last week! Moving with 3 cats is being very intense and exhausting, so that's why I wasn't able to make any tutorials for this past month. Moving to a different country is even more work than I was expecting.

The good news is that I'm almost settled in! I hope to be able to continue with the usual schedule soon.

Thanks everyone for the support and sorry for the lack of news.

See you soon!

I Made a Palette Generator: CCHIMERA

Hey there!

Today I want to announce a little tool that I'm making to help me (and anyone else) with something I struggle with a lot: color palettes. For now it only generates simple randomized 16-color palettes optimized for pixel art, but in the future I want it to become a much bigger and a multi-purpose tool.
