Extravagant Beyond Comprehension (DD4, Chapter Three, Pages 18-22)

Last week, Alexandra dropped the axe on her mother (figuratively speaking), only to discover that the wound it left was real and deep. Now she gets to sit with that feeling as she, her parents, and her uncle attend Vignelli's party. Katerina joins them, a reluctant part-participant in this whole awkward situation.

The last two pages here are the pages I thumbnailed in this video! Now they're all grown up, got facial hair, walking around and talking in complete sentences, voting, driving too fast. How time passes.

Other notes:

I really like that sunset panel.
On the big six-tall-panels two-page spread, I'm a little worried that the text is too on-the-nose. On the other hand, I'm fighting hard against a tendency I have to try to be too clever or too oblique. As it stands right now, I think the direct language is refreshing and hopefully — combined with the imagery — moving. Considering how iterative this work is, it's the sort of thing that's hard to know. You'd hope it just comes from the gut and you know whether it feels right, but as the months go by your gut keeps squirming all over the place.

In unrelated archaeology news, I was delighted to learn that there's a town in Germany where the buildings — which are built from the local stone — are riddled with tiny diamonds. Not only that, but in that town archaeologists have discovered an immaculately-preserved 3000-year old sword which, if nothing else, is cool to look at. Attn: Chris Schweizer.
