Over the past week or so, I thumbnailed out the first "chapter" of DD4, doing a lot of writing as I went. It was pretty successful!
I'm going to take the entire first chapter to final art before continuing with the rest of the book, as an experiment. I'm scared about this approach, because it's different, but it offers a few benefits, including the opportunity to think about (dwell upon) the story for the next chapter while I'm pursuing the time-consuming drawing stage. For example, last night I was warm in bed, much later than usual, tired, but I got a notion of how to make one of the characters more useful. So I got up and made the appropriate notes. If I can allow more time for that element of the """process""" then that's good.
Now, the tricky part: next steps. As I mentioned elsewhere, I want to not "overwork" the pages between thumbs and final art. On one hand, I got an iPad last year, and I used it to make the roughs for BUBBLE, and I like how those turned out. On the other, that means introducing a few digital steps between thumbnail and final art (I want to do the final art on paper, like I have for previous DDs). I'd have to get my old printer working again to transfer the digital roughs to paper, and the idea of doing that makes me exhausted. I'm wondering if maybe I shouldn't just go from my thumbnails directly to penciling my final pages.
ANYWAY, maybe I'll give that a shot and see how it works. Experimentation!
