Hey everyone!
Have you ever taken one of those personality quizzes? Not the dumb ones that go around social media, but an actual one using Myers-Briggs or something similar. I did it a few years back, and it gave some vague examples for career advice and whatnot. Kind of fun.
Recently I took a more in-depth one called 16 Personalities and it blew me away. It went into detail into the slight differences between my girl and me, like how although we're very similar in most ways, I have a disregard for authority whereas she defers to it.
It gives great insights into your strengths and weaknesses, romantic relationships, friendships, career paths, and workplace habits. If you've never taken it before, I recommend it as a way to give yourself a fresh view of yourself. Yes, it's free, and no, I'm not being paid to promote it.
It's fun to read through the different profiles, and I've used them with distinct characters I'm writing for to get a better idea of how their mind operates and what motivates them.
But I also thought it made for a nice segue into talking about my motivations for producing the games and stories I'm working on. I tested as the personality type the Campaigner (ENFP-A), and here is a line about my personality type staying motivated in the workplace:
Campaigners care about doing a good job, and they often feel that they do their best work when they can move at their own pace and do things in their own style.
(Yep! That's me alright.)
Campaigners are notorious for skipping ahead to a new project before they’ve completed the last one. They love exploring new endeavors, but once a project’s allure begins to fade, they may find it difficult to stay motivated.
(Also me.)
I hate over repetition. I'm always trying to figure out something new because I enjoy a challenge and learning new things. The problem is, a lot of game development is repetition.
Now, I'm not saying the work itself is overly repetitious. It's more about continuing to work on the same thing for too long. This is what happened last year. I expected to finish the Broken Watch Branch in a month or two, but it ended up being far larger. Instead of taking a break from it and switching to something else, I cranked away for six months straight. And this was on top of the three months I'd spent before that...
When I took July to work on Endowed, it was like escaping a dark room and going out for a hike in the hills. Then, instead of finishing the update, I released the first half after a month to keep up with my update schedule. Next, instead of finishing the update, I took a poll to ask what everyone wanted next. Hypnosis won out, so I went back to working in that dark little room. For another six months.
I work far better and faster when I enjoy what I do and am not resenting it. But that's on me. When I'm burned out in Hypnosis, I need to take time off from it so I can return to it with new ideas and fresh energy. Otherwise, I end up taking six months on an update, and that's not good for anyone.
So although I understand that a lot of you are most interested in Hypnosis, I appreciate you understanding the new schedule I posted last week which included not only Endowed but several side stories. It's my way of keeping things fresh, of allowing me to put "what happens next" into the back of my mind for a little while in between updates. It's my way of avoiding burnout.
How's work going on finishing the update, you ask?
It's solid, still trying to wrap it all up. One challenge lately is that Fantasy1290 already started another fanfic based on the story and sent it to me to check out, and there are a lot of little additions where I'm like, "damn! I didn't even think of that!" where I'm tempted to try to include them.
But I'm staying strong. If it can fit into a casual mention or some of the scenes I'm already adding, great! If not, well, maybe it can fit in other storylines. Plus, it makes for a nice accompanying story. The story doesn't follow the game exactly, but it works very well as "what if you made this choice instead" and makes the most of it.
I'm excited to finish this update and get it out to you. I'm also excited to get back to finishing up Chapter 5 of Endowed! It's going to introduce some new characters and push forward with a lot of the storylines that were teased over a year ago now.
By the way, the photo of Kassie was part of a contest with an Indiana Jones / Tomb Raider theme by Spicy Gaming. I figure she stole the pendant on her necklace and is trying to pass you on a narrow walkway surrounded by water. Sounded fun, I thought.
Alright, I'd better get back to it!
Thanks, everyone!
