Proof of Life #13: My interpretation of NTR

Pretty late post, for some it's not even monday anymore, sorry for that!
This week I've been able to work on the game a bit more, and I'm currently trying to finish up EleonoraxEzekiel flashback story, where we learn more about their past relationship.
But this post will be mainly about something I've been wanting to write about for a long time: how I interpret NTR.
There's been a lot of debate around NTR and what it actually implied, and even checking the Japanese dictionaries, they don't have the same definition for the word. So I wanted to give you guys my interpetation of NTR, so we can come to a mutual understanding on how I implement it into my games.
First, let's look into the word itself and all its derivations (bear in mind I'm not Japanese, I've just studied the language and lived in Japan for a few years):
The base verb of Netorare is Netoru (寝取る), basically meaning "to steal someone's lover/spouse away", from which stems the word Netori. The "torare" form of "Netorare" indicates the passive form, meaning "to have one's lover stolen away". For Netorase, the "torase" form at the end basically means "to let someone do sth", so it's simply the act of "allowing one's lover/spouse to be stolen away".
Now that we've got the semantics out of the way, here's how I interpret Netorare in my games: the target of NTR aren't only spouses or girlfriends, it can be anyone that has a deep connection with the MC, like family , childhood friends, etc... The NTR comes into the picture when this bond is gradually severed by a third party coming into the picture and developing a relationship that overtakes the one the MC has with the person.
So for me, the MC doesn't need to be in a relationship, or even to arbor any romantic feelings towards a girl for the NTR to happen, as long as there's a strong bond between them.

Not because I'm into incest, this is a fetish I've never really manged to understand, but only because family bonds feel more "natural", as opposed to "artificial" bonds created between spouses and lovers. For lovers, it is more feeble. One day you're together, the next it's just somebody you used to know. Once the bond's broken, it is over. However, with family, you never stop being family, so to speak. NTR or not, a mother/daughter/sister keep their status as member of the family, so the NTR feels stronger.

Also yes, character development is a huge part of the NTR, and I guess that's what a lot of people are looking for. I'm trying to show that in the game, but whether I'm doing a good job or not, only time will tell^^

I see so many games where it's called Sister or Mom NTR and I'm just like "nah it's not" they aren't YOUR lover. (In my opinion, since we've opened up a huge megashit can of worms by asking for definition of NTR here) It's like your santa game, I didn't give 2 hoots he was banging the sister. but the wife was a different story. It's the whole idea of investing personally your love, your lust, your resources and the idea of having that stolen away. For me then it tends to be a strictly more case of stealing someone elses (very few games like that) or having your girlfriend/wife stolen than just some degree or link between the two. For example where I live there is a bakery and the bakery girl is lovely, the gym I go to has a well built personal trainer, I happen to know he is stuffing a bun in her oven every other night (because his car is always on the drive, and don't tell me it's just private lessons!) but I couldn't care less because I'm not invested in either of them. Now her boyfriend however....might feel differently...if he knew. There is an interesting game I play called 'Love Love My Buddy' (which features Netorare, Netori, Netorase etc) and you have a handful of girls you can have as a companion and invest time and gifts on, only to stay at an inn and someone give her the pipe while your sleeping, the point is those girls I don't invest in, I don't care what they are doing. So for me it's about the level of investment of time and resources and the element of competition.

I personally think the most important part is establishing within the game's narrative that the members of the family have a strong relationship with one another, otherwise NTR would be pretty pointless. How the NTR goes down afterwards is up to one's fetishes. If you like degradation, then it works well. If you'd rather the girl falls in love with another, no problems either, Hope that answered the question : )
