Surprise Bonus Episode - Star Wars: Visions

Hey everyone! Today we've got a special, extremely meaty bonus ep for y'all. We took your advice and dove headfirst into Visions, the recent collection of animated shorts produced by a handful of anime studios. We dig into our favorite entries in the collection, dip into discussion about what doesn't work about the more middling episodes, and also diverge into... some other random conversation.

We know that there's a lot of interest in us doing other bonus stuff like this, but for now our time commitments with full time jobs and other Patreons make that a hard thing to commit to at any level of support. But we do still wanna do special things like this from time to time. You know, as a treat. So definitely let us know what other sort of stuff you'd love for us to tackle in the future. No promises, not even small ones, but it's always worth tossing ideas into the ring.

In any case, hope you enjoy this ep!

They had Masako Nozawa for the Astro Boy one they're not going to waste that by not having a sick lightsaber fight lol

The Dual was my favorite episode because I love the Darkside. The Ninth Jedi was my second favorite.

Haha I enjoyed the turnaround of opinion (or recency bias) on Akakiri; I quite liked that one and was surprised at the initial indifferent response to it. The character design, or at least how the creators may have conceived of her according to Austin, of the Sith was probably my only caveat about it. Otherwise though, the dread and drama of the final stage was delightful. Thanks for the bonus ep!

I don't know why they cut it from the actual documentary, but at 1:42, they do namedrop Astro Boy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9Gr9gKFxpE

Also definitely had Japanese available as a voice language on Disney+, but maybe that’s a region thing?

Definitely vibe with the choices of favorites here; I think my least favorite was a tie between The Twins & The Elder also mostly for the reasons y’all listed. I do have to give The Elder one kudos though: it’s sick when a fight does the ‘turn lightsaber off and then back on in the middle of a battle to stab’ thing. Cannot help loving that. Also found it noteworthy and a bit sad that the English subtitles for the Japanese language track were really half-assed (on Disney+ only the English track CC subtitles were available, and even Elsewhere it was clearly subtitles for the English dub). The Japanese voice talent for the shorts was top-tier with a ton of recognizable voices. And the subtitles ranged from underwhelming to (unfortunately at its worst in Lop and Ocho) off-time by a good 5-10 seconds.

I love The Village Bride so much, what a beautiful tone piece with amazing music. That final showdown is etched into my brain!

That said I hate Smooth Jabba, I'm surprised nobody brought that up

I loved Tattooine Rhapsody because I've literally wanted a band story since I watched the Max Rebo scene in RotJ

As a someone who's super into Kill la Kill( with a ton of caveats) The Twins felt super flat to me. It was probably the lack of the intense homoerotcism that normally attracts me to trigger/gainax's work

There's a story in a recent issue of Marvel's Age of Rebellion, an anthology comic, where Biggs Darklighter and Jek Porkins take a break from Rebel Alliance dogfighting to vacation at a beach planet for like a week. Nothing really happens. It's considered canon. It's also cute and I loved it to pieces. That's exactly how I feel about Tatooine Rhapsody, which serves no real purpose except to make folks smile. "Chibi Boba Fett," "Ozzy Osbourne the Hutt," and "generic shonen opening song" are all exactly what they should be, a meandering story without galaxy-wide ambitions. I love that, and wish there was more of it. So often I feel that the scope of Star Wars and the demand that each story be important is a detriment. It's what leads to the beauty of The Village Bride, sure, but it also leads to bored obligation of The Elder. A New Hope may be hard to return to without awareness of all the other SW narratives, but it's worth remembering that from the beginning the series has delighted in the goofy and unnecessary. I can't force y'all to love Tatooine Rhapsody like I do, but if you were to do more bonus episodes like these I'd love to hear you experience the silly asides from old books and comics and cartoons. They may not rewire the way we think about SW, but they do put smiles on faces. Watching a Hutt with heavy metal hair shred on his guitar put a ridiculous grin on me!
