Members of the same bloodline can sense each other, and even stuff like the Joestar Birthmark and Enya becoming wounded after her son was punctured by Polnareff just shows that this bond transcends our worlds logic. By the very same logic, if someone has ever survived the arrow, their offspring would carry a part of the 'survived the virus' genome.

The dude who said he was an alien, well, there are theories he is from where the virus came from, that is just a theory tho

These stands can then weave their way through generational bloodlines like the Joestars Thorn stand that fueled the development of Hermit Purple, Star Platinum etc. I personally like the virus explanation, and its really not that farfetched considering how bizarre this series was intended to be

For instance, it doesn't explain how the Joestar family all got stand abilities even though DIO in Jonathan's body is the only who ever came into contact with the arrow. Also it doesn't explain how some people will naturally obtain stand abilities from birth, like Avdol. Obviously there's a supernatural element to stand abilities, but trying to half explain the origin of them feels weird and unnecessary to me. I've always thought that the alien virus explanation was such a cop-out, and frankly I kinda just ignore it and pretend it isn't canon.
