One thing to point out is there really is a purpose in the anime and manga that Luffy had, at this point, not had any of Sanji's cooking, because to him it didn't matter at all. He saw how he treated others in regards to food and hunger and that was something Luffy was really charmed by. Sanji's cooking could've been bad (it isn't, of course) and Luffy still would've specifically wanted him as his chef after that interaction.
