(For those looking for backstory, copied from the comments):
Willow's true essence is the lantern itself. She's an actual Will-o'-the-Wisp, and unavoidably leads travelers to their doom, whether she wants to or not. Her body is that of a lost girl she once befriended and tried to guide safely out of the forest, but it inevitably lead to a tragic end. She grieves the fact that she couldn't save her, nor can she stop taking on her appearance. She's always careful to never let anyone follow her lead now.
