As we, Laura wrote a letter to Keith. It appears in chapter 4 or 5. And then on the Basitin islands, We see a letter written by Maddy. Both were completely uncorrespondable in terms of written language. So in short, the Keidran do have a written language. As do the Basitin. It’s just that, like you pointed out, it may not be at the forefront of thought. As for Zen and Natani, unless you grow up close to the Humans or Basitin it’s unlikely to learn their written language naturally. Just like, I had to go to school to learn what little 中文 I do I know, but if I grew up in or near A big Chinese community, or even in/near China itself, I would be more likely to know it naturally.

Not to get all nerdy, but in the comic when Maddie gives Nat that note with all the hearts, she says it’s “written in Bastian”, so then do all the Kedrian share a written language like they speak, or do they just not have one? Maybe the did at one point, but so few can write it that it’s just sort of become a lost art, like cursive and stick shifts today?

I suspect that there is a general "non-human" written language shared by several of the fuzzy groups. That doesn't mean that everyone can read, though. Literacy takes a back seat to "Get enough to Eat" most of the time.

Wait...do the Kedrian even have a written language? It seems like most Kedrian don’t know how to read in general, and I don’t think we’ve ever seen a paper with Kedrian writing on it, right?
