I think Arthur C Clark took a stab at this in his Rama series with one of his alien species that were kind of a bio robotic octospider thing…It’s been decades but I remember it was weird.

2025-12-14 23:32:46 +0000 UTCOctopus species probably would prefer to use a sort of sign language over chromatophores - apparently they have a very high metabolic cost when used. Perhaps some colour changing is used alongside that. Maybe the cost would be mitigated if they used one tentacle and switched from time to time, to let the previous tentacle's chromatophore muscles rest. But changing colours like an RGB lamp regularly would be too much. Still! performances from them would be really cool, able to mimic a lot of creatures and 'costume' themselves with their chromatophores.
