Think about how old he might have been when he saw her. He would have seen his mother in her Nox form, with golden skin, claws, teeth, and that amazing tail. But as an infant or toddler, it wouldn't sink in. As he grew up he would forget, his memory would get hazy, and he would think of it (if at all) as a lion costume.
