1. Rough sketch
I always start with a quick rough sketch. But I am trying to make it as detailed as possible. I also set a sketch layer to multiply mode. A little tip - check proportions of the eye and flip your canvas to see mistakes.
2. Base colors
Next step is base colors. I use different layers for each color, so I can easily tweak them. I also suggest you to add color variations to flat colors, slightly shifting hue, saturation of the base color.
3. Add volume
For this step I usually create a new layer, set it to multiply and start to add shadows and ambient occlusion using hard and soft brush. I also check value in greyscale.
4. Rendering
It's time for making this sketch pretty. You can merge all the layers and start to draw at it (I always save all the layers simply copying them just in case) and then starting to “clean up” all the weird areas, using brush for rendering and smudge tool.
5. Time for details!
Now I start to add details (eyelashes, eyebrows and highlights). For this purpose I always create a new layer on top of everything, it easily helps me to fix the mistakes.
