WIP // volcano

A while back I posted some different thumbnails for a painting with a vulcanic / sulfur rock theme! I got to working on the middle one and it’s a huge struggle because it’s so far outside of my comfort zone haha. I am usually someone who draws environments from studies and not from the imagination! Plus, creating compositions with a sense of space and detail distribution that fits a setting is something I still have a lot to learn about.
I ended up shifting stuff around to try and get some more drama in the composition and now I have two versions: the left one which is more close-up, and the right one which is more zoomed out. What do you guys think? Which one has a more impactful compostion and is more worthwhile to finalize?
Ahhh also themes based on specific elements are so cool! Like volcanic/ sulfur rock! Super cool!

Left one! I immediately train my focus on the figure and their impact on the environment rather than studying the environment first, figure second. It works better for this piece to see the figure and move from there- to their floating sulfur and onward.

I'll join the "left one" camp. More dynamic, brighter. There was one a while ago where a figure was seated and leaning against a rock. Still remember that one.

The one on the right for sure. So much drama, and sense of scale and depth! So much volcano magic!

Wow~ I just saw these and I love it! I personally like the one on the right! The sense of space is impressive, and I also feel that the character stands out well in it! I hope you keep at this piece <3

The right one has definitely more drama in the composition :) I also like the lava work on the left one with the yellowish palette.

I love the one on the right just a little more. More to take in from the environment.

The second one for me, the blue and yellow really look great together

I think the second one, the one on the right, has a better impact. I also like the incorporation of the slightly cooler colors in that one, it definitely draws me in more!

The right one for sure. It flows so much better and has a sense of drama while still feeling light and airy

I love both! The zoomed in one makes you feel very much a part of the scene but the zoomed out one gives that wider perspective and more depth and context.

I like the sense of scale you get in the second one

yeah it's gonna be difficult to get that detail distribution right with the rock details! but i gotta try it sometime, otherwise i will never figure out how to do this haha

i agree, i feel like the colors and contrast of the first one is working better. i will try to translate that into the composition for the second one!

For me it'd be the first one with a bit of the pink hues of the second one 🤔

The sense of visual flow with the environment directing the viewer's eye to the character is stronger in the second one and I think you've achieved a stronger sense of foreground, midground and background in it too with more atmospheric perspective at play. I think these elements make it that much more immersive. Loving the direction that these are going in.

I love the zoomed out version! The focal point is still with the character but we get a better view of the environment. I feel this version more if this makes sense :D

As presented, I like the one on the left better — the zoomed in one. BUT, if it were on a narrower canvas, something that really emphasized the vertical space, I think the zoomed-out one would be win by leaps and bounds!

The more zoomed out one has more visual impact to me. Really makes you feel how small you are compared to the landscape around you and how grand and powerful the environment you're in really is.

I prefer the second one , the character is smaller and the landscape have more depth

I like the one on the right. For me it better portrays the scope of what you're going for...you get a better feel for the size of the environment.

#1 (left) tighter shot would benefit from a focus on action with the environment as a "supporting character". #2 would seem better with a more dynamic environment (exploding lava bubbles). I kinda see the surfing waves you drew in an earlier wip but you are trying to stray to a more realistic lava flow (floe?).

I wish I could add an image to comments to better convey my thoughts (with sketched notes). The image on the right (broader view) has the stronger composition, but the contrast of values in the left/tighter shot add a lot of appeal.
My thought is to bring some of those more intense brights/darks from the 1st image into the 2nd, laid out in a way that leads the eye back into the middle area, where the figure stands with artifacts. The vibrancy of the yellow in image1 is so appealing, especially in contrast with the darker values in that foreground; you could use that some yellow + dark value combo around the center rock in image2 where the figure is. This could be as a crack in that rock leading toward the figure, as illuminated light implying the yellow lava below.
I hope that helps or makes sense. More drama and impact can be conveyed simply by reincorporating those value ranges and that intense yellow into the 2nd (broad) image.

The one on the right feels like it has better composition, but I like how we see the lava on the left one. Maybe if you implement the lava on to the right composition. . .

Hmm I prefer the colours of the second one, but the first one is more centeree towards the action. Maybe you could use some more of the colours of the second one in the first painting, and make the character lit up more from underneath because of the lava to create more dramatic effects?

The second sketch has the kind of centered composition I associate with good book cover art, and I notice those sorts of compositions tend to work well on instagram too. I do enjoy the lava detail in the first sketch, but it feels more stable and secure despite being full of things that objectively should make it feel tense. I’m not sure what gives that feeling of stability and safety, so I might choose to push that composition first, because I find I learn more from pushing on the pieces that seem like they shouldn’t work.

I was going to say exactly this. The second but finding a way to bring some of those highlights from the first one.
Both look awesome though, In fact the more I look at them the more I like the first one just as much or more. The composition in 1 leads the eye to the character (whose pose I love) and 2 kinda makes you wander a bit more. which may or may not be what you want. In any case please keep the highlights haha.

Personally I feel more drawn towards the second one.. The sense of scale really adds allot to the theme of the piece. Altho you might have a more difficult time rendering the second one, because volcanic rock tends to have allot of cracks and details, so it’ll be harder to make the character stand out. You’ll have to use all your tricks 😉. It’ll be important where to add details and where to leave the painting rough. The reason I like the second one better (other then the sense of scale I mentioned) is the flow, composition and definitely the depth is much stronger. The foreground-middle-and-background placement really shows great depth with some haze/steam in between them. Great job so far 😁 Looking forward to seeing this one worked out. If you’re having a hard time finding good references for this.. might wanna check out “Brad Lewis”. He’s a photographer who makes amazing images of active volcanos 🌋😁

I think the second one too, because we have more space for understanding connection between the girl and rocks in levitation and it's create more focus on that. It's very awesome !!!

I actually adore the shape of the main rock in number one but also love the shape of the cliff in number 2! I think overall I prefer number 1! Amazing stuff!

The one on the right. Composition feels stronger, esp with the empty space/sky and the size of the cliff. Also, I like the colors on the right more, the pinks/purples!

I like the composition and the sky on the the second one, but don't want you to lose the highlight of the lava in the foreground of the first one. They're both really nice! ^_^

Definitely the one on the right. Has a grander, more dramatic feel to it cuz you can see the whole environment and what’s being affected.

The zoomed-out one on the right feels more complete, like there is something grand happening. I’m more of a figurative person, myself, so I also tend to keep things zoomed in, but when a composition is strong you can read the character even if they are small on the canvas. You’re making me want to practice this haha

The one on the right has a stronger composition I think. And since it revolves around the terrain more than the character it plays well into your challenge 😉

The left one is good if you want the focus to be the figure. The right one is good if you want the focus to be the environment. Since you seem to be focusing on the environment more in this case Id say the right one would have the best impact.

I think the second one like a lot of people, it shows more of the dynamics in the scene and you get better sense of the environment zoomed out, where as the close up I almost wonder what’s happening and where the setting is, like I’m literally cut off from seeing the whole image

I think the second one is better because the character is smaller, so the nature is more impactful and give a sense of strength

Almost agree with Lara. The character look a bit lost in the second one. However the scene is more comprehensive and gives a better sense of drama.. I find it pitty though that the lava is not visible. Summary: the second one would be best if the character was bigger (or closer), and the lava was visible.

I'd say the one one on the right. The sense of scale and depth is a little stronger, plus the subtle purple in the distance.

I haven’t yet the thumbnails so this is 100% new for me, but the colors are surprising for a volcano theme and I really love that! As for the composition, the first one looks better, you have a clearer look on the character while maintaining a nice amount of background. In the secons one, the character seems a bit lost in the background. Anyway, amazing work as always! 💛
