Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [583]

Gary stared blankly.

He glanced at August, then at the members of Team Yell surrounding August.

Very quickly, he understood exactly what had happened.

It was definitely August again, out there doing who-knows-what under his name!

And the person who also understood the situation, just like Gary, was Marnie!

The “Advisor Gary” that Team Yell had been talking about—whom she’d been trying to track down this whole time—was actually August!

She had even thanked August back in Turffield! Just thinking about it, her body involuntarily started to tremble slightly.

As Marnie struggled to suppress her emotions, the nearby Team Yell members saw her reaction and mistakenly believed she was simply overwhelmed with excitement. They eagerly introduced August’s glorious deeds to her:

“Miss Marnie, this right here is Advisor Gary! He’s the one who gave us the idea for the banners!”

“Mr. Gary here is also your loyal fan, Miss Marnie!”

August, unable to stop Team Yell in time, tilted his head upward and stared hopelessly at the sky.

Stop talking already, please…

He suddenly felt a deep sympathy for the Chief.

But unexpectedly, after hearing Team Yell’s explanation, Marnie gradually calmed down.

Then August saw Marnie slowly lift her head, revealing a broken smile on her face.

Now August truly broke into a sweat.

Hey, please don’t look at me like that. I'm actually a bit scared…

He quickly glanced around for help, only to find everyone around him wearing expressions of amused spectators—especially Giovanni, who was clearly enjoying August’s distress.

Just then, a voice suddenly rang out from afar.

“Marnie, there you are!” Gloria ran over breathlessly, backpack bouncing behind her. She excitedly told Marnie, “Marnie! I’ve finally tracked down that guy named Gary who embarrassed you so badly!”

“I saw his name on the match schedule!”

“His match is the day after tomorrow—we can go wait for him at the arena and get revenge!”

As Gloria spoke, she clenched her fists dramatically, looking ready to settle a blood feud on Marnie’s behalf.

Hearing Gloria’s words, Marnie replied faintly, “I've already found him.”

“Eh? Why does your voice sound…wait, you said you already found him?” Gloria quickly scanned the surroundings.

“Mr. August!?” Gloria finally noticed August standing right there.

Could it be that this Gary person was actually Mr. August’s friend? If they went after him, wouldn’t it cause trouble for Mr. August?

Gloria hesitated, momentarily conflicted.

“‘Advisor Gary’ is August.”

“I’m the real Gary!”

“Ahem, ‘Advisor Gary’ is an alias I used.”

Marnie, Gary, and August spoke simultaneously.

The sudden flood of information nearly short-circuited Gloria’s brain!

Gloria, feeling dizzy, took a while before finally managing to process the situation.

“So…the ‘Gary’ listed on the match schedule isn’t the one we're looking for—but actually you?” Gloria asked, pointing at the real Gary.

Gary nodded quickly, clearing his name, then stepped aside to continue watching the drama unfold.

Gloria then slowly turned her gaze toward August: “And the real ‘Advisor Gary’ was actually you, Mr. August, using an alias?”

August coughed awkwardly and nodded.

Instantly, Gloria’s eyes turned into exactly the same accusing glare as Marnie’s.

That was a look reserved only for villains.

She’d already been tricked once by August—though, admittedly, that time had resulted in gaining Marnie as a close friend.

August himself felt innocent. He had thought Team Yell would use the banner strategy just once—who knew they'd keep it going from Turffield all the way to Hammerlocke City?

Thinking about Marnie’s misfortune, August couldn’t help but shudder slightly.

For once, a rare pang of guilt appeared in his heart.

By this point, even Team Yell—no matter how dense—realized Marnie seemed to have an issue with “Advisor Gary.” Or rather…now it should be August.

They immediately began clamoring to appease Marnie:

“Mr. August just gave us an idea.”

“Right! Mr. August only meant well!”

“Miss Marnie, if you don't like it, we'll never use banners again!”

Marnie’s expression remained impassive at first, completely unaffected—until the last sentence finally changed her expression.

She turned sharply to face the surrounding Team Yell members: “Put that promise in writing!”

Only after receiving a written agreement from Team Yell to never use banners again did Marnie’s expression finally return to normal, no longer looking utterly broken.

Clearly, freeing herself from public humiliation had significantly improved her mood, preventing a total breakdown.

“I’m truly sorry for causing you trouble,” August sincerely apologized. “Don’t worry—I’ll definitely make it up to you.”

Beside him, Gary and Giovanni both stared at August with expressions of absolute disbelief.

August actually apologized?

Was this really the same August!?

Hearing August’s apology, Marnie’s anger also somewhat softened.

“So, what’s the compensation?” With Blue absent, Malva stepped smoothly into the role of supporting August’s punchline.

“An invitation to join the International Police, of course!” August cheerfully offered Marnie and Gloria. “How about it—interested in joining the Kanto branch of the International Police?”

Marnie and Gloria both froze.

Giovanni silently reflected that he had still underestimated August’s shamelessness.

No wonder August had apologized earlier—he had this trap laid out all along… Giovanni immediately saw that August had planned from the beginning to invite these two girls to join his branch.

“That's not compensation—that's straight-up revenge!” Gary couldn’t help but comment.

But noticing August’s warning glance, Gary quickly covered his mouth, pretending he’d never spoken.

Marnie wasn’t influenced by Gary’s remark; instead, she seriously asked for more details about joining the Kanto branch.

“Food and housing covered, excellent salary, mission bonuses, all-expenses-paid travel, paid vacation…”

“Is it really that good?” Gloria asked skeptically.

That sounded way too good to be true!

Gloria, from her hometown of Postwick, might not have had actual work experience, but she'd seen plenty of posts online. How could a job this amazing really exist?

Even Marnie, who came from Spikemuth—a town slowly falling into decline—held a trace of suspicion.

She’d watched Larry’s match earlier. Even the Elite Four’s job was exhausting; could the International Police really offer better conditions than an Elite Four member?

Hearing Marnie mention Larry, August smiled.

Of all people, she’d used Larry as her example…

Even among the Elite Four, Larry was by far the most miserable.

Surprisingly, Gary chose this moment to speak fairly: “Those benefits he listed—they're actually all true…”

August turned toward Gary, about to give him an approving glance, when Gary abruptly changed his tone:

“But seriously—I suggest you two run while you still can!”

“Mmmhmm!”

Gold and his Aipom quickly covered Gary’s mouth.

Speaking like that right in front of Boss August—do you have a death wish?!

Gloria and Marnie fell into hesitation.

Should they join...? Gary’s warning just now to “run” made them a little uneasy.

But not joining… Mr. August had said it was compensation, and rejecting compensation somehow made them feel like they’d be missing out.

With just a little psychological trick, August easily had Gloria and Marnie right where he wanted them.

Giovanni cast a disdainful glance at August.

But August remained utterly unbothered. If the enemy disapproves, then it proves I'm doing something right!

In the end, Gloria and Marnie decided to join. On one hand, as August explained, the International Police position was just part-time; it wouldn’t affect their future ambitions of becoming professional trainers or Gym Leaders.

On the other hand, there was the International Police’s core ideal—maintaining world peace.

Gloria and Marnie asked themselves honestly: even if they didn't join the International Police, they’d still step forward whenever confronted with injustice or threats to world peace!

August smiled warmly: “Welcome to the Kanto branch of the International Police…”

He handed Gloria and Marnie their official cell phones and added both of them into the group chat.

Counting Ruby, who had just joined earlier, the Kanto branch now had three new members!

The future was bright—truly promising!

Observing August’s incredibly practiced actions, Gloria and Marnie felt a sudden suspicion that he’d been planning this for quite a while.

Soon after, they found themselves pulled into yet another chat, this one called the “Galar Project.”

“Galar Project?” A flicker of confusion crossed Marnie’s eyes.

“That’s right—the Galar Project. Galar is currently facing a major crisis,” August explained. Because Team Yell was still nearby, he avoided specifics. “And that’s precisely what I came here to resolve!”

August’s voice was filled with absolute confidence, causing Gloria and Marnie to mistakenly feel that the “major crisis facing Galar” might not be such a big deal after all.

But both clearly knew it was just a misconception.

The only reason this misconception even arose was because August was simply too powerful!

As the two girls silently thought this, in an unnoticed corner, Mew secretly passed two seeds to Morpeko.

With a cheerful “peko~!” Morpeko zapped the seeds, instantly popping them into popcorn.

“Mew!” Mew and Morpeko each happily took one.

And then they repeated the process again and again.

By the time August and the others prepared to leave, Morpeko had overeaten so badly it lay sprawled on the ground, belly swollen from fullness, surrounded by a pile of scattered seeds.

“…?”

August eyed the innocently blinking Mew suspiciously.

What on earth did you do, to make Morpeko eat itself into this condition?

Fortunately, Morpeko’s digestion was exceptionally powerful, its round belly visibly deflating in seconds. Moments later, it cheerfully resumed zapping seeds into popcorn alongside Mew.

Watching Mew and Morpeko’s enthusiastic teamwork, August shook his head inwardly.

Is this what friendship between foodies looks like?

By the time August’s group returned to their rented temporary base…

Sabrina glanced at the newly joined Gloria and Marnie, then turned her gaze toward August, eyes full of silent condemnation—as though staring at a playboy.

She’d only gone shopping briefly with Blue and Cynthia, leaving August alone for just a short while, and now their Kanto branch suddenly had two new members.

Faced with Sabrina’s baseless accusations, August was utterly speechless.

What kind of things go through your head all day long?!

Ignoring Sabrina, August turned toward Blue: “Did you find anything today?”

Blue hadn’t gone shopping merely for fun; rather, she’d taken the opportunity to observe the situation in Hammerlocke City.

As Rose’s home turf, this city was filled with his key subordinates.

Even while watching the matches today, August constantly felt someone’s eyes closely monitoring him.

“The League personnel patrolling the streets have increased,” Blue reported thoughtfully. “And they seemed to be running some security drills, like they’re preparing for some unexpected situation.”

Of course, August knew exactly what “unexpected situation” they were preparing for.

Rose clearly wasn’t oblivious to the consequences of awakening Eternatus.

“Fully aware yet still persisting…a crime made worse by knowledge.”

Rose’s deliberate insistence on awakening Eternatus, despite fully knowing it would endanger Galar, was far worse than simple ignorance.

It was effectively taking the entire Galar region hostage to solve an energy crisis that might or might not occur a thousand years from now.

And yet Rose still thought everything he was doing was for the good of Galar.

Facing Rose’s twisted obsession…just thinking about it made August’s chest tighten.

“Cogita-san, do you have any insights on Eternatus?” August, always thorough with preparations, asked Cogita for backup.

He wasn’t genuinely asking for intel—he already knew enough about Eternatus.

Instead, he wanted Cogita to help suppress Eternatus’s destructive impact, keeping the damage to Galar minimal.

Cogita easily understood the unspoken request behind August’s words. She smiled gently:

“Eternatus is a Poison/Dragon-type Legendary Pokémon. If you possess both Fairy and Steel typings, it becomes possible to fully neutralize Eternatus’s threat. Defeating it would then be much simpler.”

Cogita’s hidden meaning was equally straightforward: give me the [Pixie Plate] and the [Iron Plate], and I’ll gladly help.

August: “…”

He had the [Pixie Plate] already, but as for the [Iron Plate]

Cogita was basically forcing him to gamble with Arceus’s lottery again!

Gary, completely unable to decipher August and Cogita’s coded exchange, thoughtfully analyzed Cogita’s words:

If Eternatus was Poison/Dragon-type…

Didn’t that mean he himself—taught by Giovanni, holding Landorus, and specializing in Ground-types—could finally show off his full strength in battle against Eternatus!?

At this sudden thought, Gary’s eyes instantly lit up.

He was already picturing himself dominating the battle and basking in everyone’s admiration.

After a fierce internal struggle, August’s sense of duty as an International Police officer finally triumphed over his personal dignity. He chose Galar’s safety over his own pride.

So what if it’s just another lottery draw!

Worst case, he’d just pull another useless handshake coupon and get mercilessly mocked by that llama.

Besides, he’d grown so powerful lately—maybe this time, it’d be him humiliating the llama instead!

At this thought, August’s posture suddenly straightened, confidence returning to him.

I’ll pull!

I’ll pull with all I’ve got!

Eevee had no clue what August was thinking.

But sensing August’s determination, Eevee cried out happily, “Vee!” and enthusiastically wagged its tail in solidarity.
