Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [568]

Motostoke City was an industrial town located in the central Galar region, powered entirely by steam engines.

Even August couldn’t decide if it was advanced or outdated.

Call it advanced—yet who still used steam engines nowadays?

Call it outdated—but it managed to power the entire city on its own.

...

Inside a hotel room, Zacian sprawled lazily on the carpet, napping. August lay stretched out comfortably on the bed.

Fresh from a bath with Gardevoir, Mew imitated August’s lazy posture and dove onto the bed.

“Mew~!”

Mew rolled around on the mattress with a blissful expression on her face.

“Eating whenever you’re awake and sleeping whenever you’re full... At least do a bit of exercise,” August said to Mew.

Hearing August’s words, Mew paused briefly.

Just as August thought Mew had finally listened—

She glanced down at her little belly, did a single token sit-up, and then continued rolling around, stuffing snacks into her mouth and scattering crumbs everywhere.

August: “...Mew!!!”

You’re eating snacks in bed—where exactly are we supposed to sleep tonight!?

Just as August was about to discipline Mew, his phone rang.

Gary’s voice echoed through the receiver: “August, we've arrived in Motostoke. Didn’t you say you’d pick us up? Where are you?”

August glanced at the time.

He suddenly realized that maybe, perhaps, possibly...today was indeed the day Gary and the others were scheduled to arrive—and he'd completely forgotten about it.

Of course, admitting fault was out of the question. The key was acting as confidently as possible. As long as his mouth was tough enough, mistakes were impossible.

Facing Gary’s questioning tone, August responded with even greater astonishment: “No way, no way! A Kanto Champion like you can’t even find the hotel by yourself? Do you seriously need me to pick you up?”

Hearing August’s sarcastic retort, Gary’s eyes instantly widened.

Weren’t you the one who promised to come pick us up and then forgot about it!? How did this suddenly become my fault...?

Utterly outrageous!

Just as Gary was about to argue back, August’s voice cut in again: “Silph Hotel in central Motostoke. Remember not to get lost!”

Indeed—even here, where Macro Cosmos dominated nearly every industry, the Silph Group still managed to operate a few hotels.

August promptly hung up after finishing his sentence.

Gary listened blankly to the busy signal from the receiver: “…”

He didn’t feel even slightly offended by being hung up on; rather, he accepted it quickly, even naturally.

It wasn’t that he'd been trained by August into becoming an absolute masochist.

He simply realized—yep, this was the same familiar August!

August rented a conference room in the hotel specifically to welcome Gary and the others.

At the moment, Blue and Sabrina were helping groom Zacian’s fur. Zacian, having always lived in the wild, had never experienced such tender care before, and momentarily became rather enamored.

Meanwhile, August sat in a chair holding Mew, playing with Kubfu together.

Mew dangled a Pokéblock teasingly in front of Kubfu’s face, swinging it back and forth.

“Mew~!”

At Mew’s signal, Kubfu flashed out its paw like lightning—and missed completely.

Mew instantly wore a smug expression, popping the Pokéblock into her mouth.

Kubfu, having failed to grab the snack, drooped its head sadly and leaned close against August.

Mew blew onto her tiny finger and flicked it against Kubfu’s forehead.

Thunk!

Kubfu clutched its head pitifully.

But then Mew mischievously produced another Pokéblock, once again waving it in front of Kubfu.

Kubfu’s eyes flared with determination as it accepted the challenge.

Staring intently at the Pokéblock, Kubfu entered a deep state of concentration. A forgotten martial arts mantra Master Mustard had once recited to it surfaced slowly in its mind.

An inexplicable aura began spreading through the room.

Just as Kubfu’s fighting spirit peaked—

Suddenly, the door burst open.

“The great Gary-sama has arrived in Galar!” Gary loudly declared.

Gary’s sudden appearance instantly drew nearly everyone’s attention. Kubfu seized this distraction—

Now’s the moment!

Whoosh!

Using Gary’s abrupt entry as a diversion and taking advantage of Mew’s split attention, Kubfu again launched its lightning-fast strike.

This time, Kubfu’s timing was perfect—there was no way it could miss, theoretically speaking.

However…

Kubfu stared at its empty paw in confusion, then at Mew, who casually popped the Pokéblock into her mouth again.

How...how could I possibly miss again!?

Kubfu was utterly perplexed.

“You lost again, huh? I told you, you’re no match for Mew,” August commented unsurprised.

Mew’s reflexes were seven times faster than a human’s.

To Mew, Kubfu’s movements were practically slow-motion—especially when it involved Pokéblocks. Under those circumstances, if Kubfu ever successfully snatched a Pokéblock from Mew’s grasp, that’d truly be the day miracles occurred.

August patted the thoroughly defeated Kubfu comfortingly.

Turning his attention to Gary, he asked curiously, “Why is it only you? Where are the others?”

For this World Championship, the entire Kanto Branch had mobilized—why was Gary alone?

“They…” Gary had barely opened his mouth when Gold and Silver walked into the room right behind him.

Immediately upon entering, Gold spotted Hoopa.

These two—August genuinely had no idea why—had somehow become best friends, practically inseparable. Soon they were shoulder-to-shoulder again, whispering excitedly.

Silver, however, approached August directly to give a report on the status of the Kanto Branch prison.

“The prison is temporarily being guarded by Dialga and Palkia,” Silver explained. “Theoretically, no jailbreak should be possible.”

With Dialga and Palkia present, breaking out couldn’t even be described as “Hell Mode” anymore. With one controlling time, the other space—escaping from under their noses would require direct assistance from Arceus itself. Otherwise, it was simply impossible.

August nodded, showing his understanding.

Actually, it wasn’t too urgent. He was planning on moving all the prisoners except Ghetsis to the Galar region soon anyway.

And then…

White entered, followed closely by Black, Pearl, and Diamond.

Speaking of Pearl and Diamond... no one really knew where they’d heard White was the president of a talent agency, but the two of them had proactively joined White’s BW Talent Company, enthusiastically becoming comedic performers under his management.

Didn’t they realize White’s experience was limited solely to managing Pokémon talent?

As for Rosa...

She'd interrupted her education after joining the Kanto Branch. Still a student who hadn’t even graduated from the Trainer Academy, she was basically here just to fill numbers. One glance at her blank, adorable expression made it abundantly clear.

Meanwhile, Platinum and Lillie were currently with Lusamine and planned to return to Galar a bit later.

“Malva-san said she has an important show to film, and she'll join us as soon as it’s wrapped up,” Blue explained. “Same for Sapphire and Courtney; they’ll come after finishing their research in Hoenn.”

With that, aside from the research staff and the team stationed in Hisui, the entire Kanto Branch had now gathered here.

A perfect opportunity for a motivational speech!

Thus, August cleared his throat and asked loudly: “Since we’ve all gathered here in Galar, let me ask—what is our goal!?”

Gary instantly raised his hand: “To settle things for you, August!”

Chairman Rose had dared to target August by changing the rules. It wasn’t just a slap in August’s face—it was outright disrespect toward the entire Kanto Branch!

“Let’s stir up the World Championships! If they don’t wanna host it fairly, they shouldn’t host it at all!” Gold eagerly joined Gary, clearly enjoying the chaos.

“Overthrow Rose, seize control of Galar!” Sabrina added quietly, just joining in the fun.

“What? August wants to become Chairman of Galar!?”

“What!? August plans to be Chairman of the Pokémon League itself!?”

Even Mew waved her tiny fists, gleefully adding to the chaos.

As everyone’s claims spiraled increasingly out of control, August hurriedly shouted for them to stop.

What in the world are you people even saying!?

My carefully cultivated reputation as a defender of justice is going to be ruined by your nonsense rumors!

“Our goal is to uphold order! To protect the hard-won peace of the Pokémon League!” August declared righteously.

Everyone stared at August with skeptical faces.

Clearly, not a single one of them believed a word August was saying.

August: “……”

In this day and age, it’s so rare to find someone like himself willing to speak truthfully. Why couldn’t they appreciate it even a tiny bit!?

August shook his head helplessly at everyone.

Well, regardless of their ridiculousness, the atmosphere of this motivational gathering had indeed been successfully stirred up.

“Remember, everyone—while participating in the World Championships, don’t forget to secretly collect criminal evidence against Rose!”

“Understood, Boss August!” Everyone replied in unison.

Hmmmm….

Listening to their enthusiastic answers, August was inexplicably filled with the strange sensation that he was attending a villainous organization’s meeting.

Alarmed, August quickly shook that absurd thought from his head.

How terrifying—how could he possibly be the villain here?

Meanwhile, unnoticed by August, Kubfu—still out of its Poké Ball—was gazing at him with eyes sparkling full of admiration, awestruck by its trainer’s charismatic leadership.

Next time, I'll become as powerful and impressive as my trainer!

Gary now noticed Kubfu and Zacian nearby.

“These two Pokémon, August—are they your new catches?” Gary squatted down, reaching to pet Zacian’s head—

But Zacian ruthlessly smacked his hand away.

“Oh, yeah. Just casually caught two legendary Pokémon,” August said nonchalantly.

Gary’s hand froze mid-motion, instantly petrified.

Excuse me?

Two legendary Pokémon? Casually?

Why had something like that never happened casually to him!?

Gary, who’d just arrived in Galar, once again tasted the cruel unfairness of this world.

He clenched his teeth so hard in envy that they nearly shattered.

···

The arrival of Gary and the others seemed to signal the start of something big.

When August left the hotel the next morning and stepped onto the street, he immediately noticed many unfamiliar faces clearly not from Galar.

Each one had a distinctive trait—a full set of six Poké Balls clipped to their belts.

These trainers, evidently competitors in the World Championships, either browsed their phones to find Galar’s famous restaurants or eagerly began matchmaking battles on the spot.

“Oh! Someone matched with me already!” Black exclaimed excitedly.

As one of the newer Kanto Branch members, Black had never participated in the World Championships before, had no ranking, and had to start from the very bottom—Poké Ball Tier.

Black eagerly ran off holding his phone to find his first opponent.

A moment later, Rosa also matched with an opponent.

Watching Rosa command Snivy against another trainer’s Sobble, August evaluated casually, “They’re evenly matched.”

Though Rosa was obviously stronger by a bit, their battle was still firmly in the "rookies pecking at each other" category. To be genuinely watchable, they'd have to at least reach Great Ball Tier.

Battles of this level were something Rosa could handle effortlessly on her own.

Just as August turned to leave—

Suddenly, two very familiar figures dressed in red and blue suits blocked his path.

“August! You won’t escape this time!”

“You made us search for you for so long—utterly unforgivable!”

Sordward and Shielbert stood before him with furious faces, as if August owed them billions.

August, utterly puzzled, opened his mouth to respond—

But Gary stepped forward first, answering on his behalf.

Taking a step forward, Gary asked loudly: “And who exactly are you two!?”

“You don’t even recognize us? We are—”

August cut them off mercilessly: “Just two impoverished members of Galar’s former royal family. No need to pay attention to them.”

Hearing August’s casual insult, Sordward and Shielbert immediately flushed crimson.

Especially after seeing Gary’s sudden look of realization, their already fragile self-esteem took yet another heavy blow.

Who’s impoverished!?

People had simply forgotten their ancestors who’d saved the Galar region—that’s all!

These ungrateful, forgetful fools were the truly unforgivable ones!

Though seething with anger, Sordward and Shielbert hadn’t forgotten their real purpose for confronting August.

“We came here to challenge you to a battle!”

“August! Do you dare accept our challenge!?” Sordward and Shielbert pointed fiercely at him.

August tilted his head curiously: “You want to challenge me?”

He clearly recalled warning them last time. That they still dared come before him now—was it pure stupidity, or did they actually have some kind of hidden trump card?

Given the duo’s habitual foolishness, August couldn’t immediately tell which scenario applied.

Thus, August shot Gary a meaningful look.

Seeing August’s signal, Gary—realizing it was his chance to show off—promptly stepped forward, gripping his Poké Ball.

“Want to challenge August? Then you’ll have to get past me first!”

As a proud member of the Kanto Branch, he naturally wouldn’t shirk this responsibility.

Sordward and Shielbert froze completely. They clearly hadn’t foreseen this turn of events at all.
